Seeking Susan

Desperately Seeking Susan,
the new musical based on the 1985 MGM film of the same name set to the
greatest hits of Blondie, has posted closing notices at the West End's
Novello Theatre. The show's last performance will be on December 15,
just one month to the day after its high-profile opening night on
November 15 (with previews from October 16). It had been booking
through April 19, 2008.

The screen-to-stage adaptation is the second musical in a row to
shutter prematurely at the Novello. The Broadway transfer of the
five-time Tony Award-winning The Drowsy Chaperone closed there in August just two months after its West End premiere.

A statement released today said: "The producers wish to thank the
talented cast, creative team and company for all their hard work and
dedication to this production. Despite fantastic performances and
enthusiastic audiences, the ticket sales have not been sufficient, and
the producers have had to make the difficult decision to close the

Set in 1979, Desperately Seeking Susan centers on
bored New Jersey housewife Roberta Glass who spots a personal ad
entitled "Desperately Seeking Susan" and heads off to Manhattan in
search of the exciting Susan herself. Things get complicated when,
after buying Susan's jacket, Roberta is knocked unconscious. Awaking
with amnesia, she assumes she is Susan, who is also being desperately
sought by the mob.

Amongst the Blondie hits included in the stage version, conceived and
written by American Peter Michael Marino, are "Hanging on the
Telephone," "The Tide Is High," "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," "Rapture,"
and "One Way or Another." Blondie's Debbie Harry and Chris Stein also
penned a new ballad, "Moment of Truth," especially for the show.

Emma Williams and Kelly Price star as Susan and Roberta, the roles
created on screen by Madonna and Rosanna Arquette. The cast also
features Leanne Best (Leslie), Mark McGee (Jay), Alec Newman (Dez) and
Jonathan Wrather (Gary). The musical is directed by Angus Jackson and
designed by Tim Hatley, with lighting by Hugh Vanstone and choreography
by Andy Blankenbuehler.

Madonna aims to boost Revolver flick

Madonna aims to boost her husband Guy Ritchie's new 'Revolver'

Monday, November 26th 2007, 10:12 PM

Madonna is hoping to sprinkle a little stardust on hubbie Guy Ritchie's latest gangster flick, which has been retooled for its delayed U.S. release.

The couple will co-host a VIP preview of "Revolver" with Piaget on Sunday for invited tastemakers including Howard Stern, Lauren Bacall, Helena Christensen, Patricia Clarkson and Ivanka Trump.

Madonna's star power can only help a film that stumbled after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in 2005 and was slammed by critics when released in the U.K.

A pal says the flick was marketed to British audiences as a comedic romp similar to Ritchie's "Snatch" - but it left them confused by its more "cerebral" theme. (Or "pretentious style and fractured storytelling," as The Hollywood Reporter sniffed.)

"You have to pay attention — you may have to sit through it twice to figure it out," co-star Vincent Pastore (who plays opposite Ray Liotta, Jason Statham and Andre Benjamin) told me yesterday. "Which I just did with 'No Country for Old Men,' so it doesn't mean it's a bad movie."

The film, due in cinemas Dec. 7, has been recut for its U.S. release

HOW HIGH was to be a backdrop video on Confessions tour!

The plot was there, the storyboard was there but the video was never shot.

Rumors about a video for the song "How High"('Confessions on a Dancefloor') were running around way before the "Confessions Tour" was on the road. Now it's time to put some truth to these stories.

Madonna had 3 potential directors in mind for this project, among them previous tour videos director, Dago Gonzalez and Choreographer Jamie King ('Sorry'). Location was chosen and the sketches for the video were made. The concept, which was divided to 3 parts, presented Madonna getting ready for a show, walking on what seems to be a runway, surrounded by camera flashes.

Here's a brief description of the video by its storyboard:

The video starts with words like 'Fame, 'Fortune', 'Star' etc. running in glitter letters over a black screen. The next shot is Madonna walking on hills; in the frame you only see her legs walking and the camera follows them till it stops and shooting her from the back. In the next part, she sits down in front of a mirror with 4 hands attacking her for make up and hair, while she starts singing "It's funny…". She gets up from her chair, pushes their hands and starts walking in a corridor which leads her to the stage.

Throughout the whole video you see cuttings from tabloids and press showing Paparazzi images, gossip headlines and some tragic events like Princess Diana's car accident.

Due to probably lack of time, this idea was in the end changed and they re-edited the 'Sorry' video for the remix, which made it to the show.

We sure hope she uses this idea in the future!

Madonna wine bottle up for bid

Madonna wine bottle up for bid

Hang with us -- it's complicated but worth it. Madonna's father, Silvio Ciccone,
established a winery in northern Michigan in 1995 and bottled a limited
number of wines using images and branding of his famous daughter. The
small production quantities make them rare in the wine world.

Mark Wardynski,
the president of Happy Iguana Inc. in Canton, an online seller of
marine electronics gear, has donated a bottle for a charity auction
currently running on eBay. (Quirk alert! Due to ATF and various state
alcohol regulations, this is an empty bottle that has collector value
for its bottle, label and wine cork.)

National Safe Boating Council will receive 100% of the proceeds, and
Happy Iguana is providing free shipping to the highest bidder.

irrefutable math? Madonna = Michigan; Ciccone Winery = Michigan;
Boating-Fishing Safety = Michigan; Happy Iguana Inc. = Michigan.

Want to bid? Go to www.happyiguana.com or www.ebay.com and enter the item number (230192089420) into any eBay search box.

And maybe you could buy and give it to Kabbalah-practicing Madonna's immediate family.

Madonnas Estate in New magazine (VOGUE LIVING)

Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People

Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People: No surprise here, but Vogue editor Hamish Bowles' homage is largely centered around the fashion world. There are spreads on current and past homes of Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, Karl Lagerfeld and the late Gianni Versace. My favorite? A tour of Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s
English country manor. It’s the legendary Ashcombe estate of 1,000
acres of rolling hills and valleys. The late legendary portrait
photographer Cecil Beaton leased the place for 15 years in the 1930s and '40s. And leave it to Vogue
and Madonna to pay tribute to Beaton’s extravagant lifestyle by
temporarily dyeing some of the Ritchies’ sheep pastel pink, blue,
yellow and green just for their photo shoot.

Lola to become movie star

Madonna’s daughter Lourdes offered Harry Potter role

Madonna and daughter LourdesWashington, Nov 21: If Warner Bros. gets their way, then music icon Madonna’s fans will soon be seeing her daughter Lourdes in the next Harry Potter movie - The Half-Blood Prince.

A source revealed that the studio has asked Lourdes, nicknamed Lola, to join the cast, and that she is desperate to accept the one in a lifetime role.

“An executive at Warners wanted to cast Lola in the last Potter film and has renewed his interest for the next movie. Lola would love to do it - she is a huge fan,” The Sun quoted the source, as saying.

“Lola has definitely inherited her mother’s hunger for fame.

“After all her recent public appearances, looking more like a sophisticated teen than a child, the attention on her is really growing. Offers have poured in - film offers, sponsorship.”

However, if Lola decides to join, she will not be the only one with star connections, for actor Ralph Fiennes’ nine-year-old nephew Hero Fiennes Tiffin has already signed to play the child version of Lord Voldemort.

Apart from Harry Potter, Lourdes has also been offered a role in a kids’ musical similar to Bugsy Malone in development by Warner Bros. Then there’s H&M’s offer to let her launch a line of kids’ clothes designed by her.

However, there is just one person standing in the way of Lourdes and famer – mum Madonna.

Madge, as the source reveals, thinks her daughter is just a bit too young for the fame game.

“Madonna is having serious doubts over letting her do the musical. Even something as innocent as a clothing range she turned down on behalf of Lola. She wants her to lead as normal a childhood as possible,” the source said.

“But she knows it’s inevitable that sooner or later Lola will become famous on her own.

“Lola has a very strong sense of herself. She has often said she wants to become a dancer.” (ANI)

The interview is great and entertaining as always happens when Pete meets Stuart, but this time it does also contain two important bits of information that shed some light on the genesis of Madonna's new album and on the plans for a new tour.

In his chat with Pete Tong, Price explains that - while the new Madonna album is expected for the next year, a new tour is not coming soon.
"I don't think there will be a tour, imminently", Stuart said.

He also explains why he has not been involved on the production of the new album:
"She is doing a new album, but she wants to do an urban record this time that's not really kind of what I do, so she's hooked up with Pharrell and Timbaland and is doing that record at the moment which I think comes out next year."

Gucci And Madonna Host A Night To Benefit Raising Malawi And UNICEF

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - November 15th 2007: Madonna and Gucci will host an exclusive fundraising event on February 6, 2008 to celebrate the opening of Gucci's largest store in the world, the New York 5th Avenue Flagship. Co-chaired by Gucci's Creative Director, Frida Giannini, this event will benefit Raising Malawi and UNICEF, and will consist of dinner followed by a guest speaker, musical performance and an after party. This special evening will be dedicated to raising funds and awareness for orphans and children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Joining Madonna and Frida Giannini is a list of distinguished co-chairs, including Adrien Brody, Arpad Busson, Salma Hayek and Frans-Henri Pinault, TLeoni, Lucy Liu, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Gwyneth Paltrow, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, and Sting and Trudie Styler. Both together and individually, Gucci and Madonna share a history of commitment to the fight against AIDS, as well as support for orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Beginning in 1997, Madonna served as Honorary Co-chair of the record-breaking Gucci fundraising event for Aids Project Los Angeles. Ten years later, Gucci and Madonna have both responded to the global circumstances of the AIDS pandemic, pursuing interests on behalf of orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

"I am grateful that Gucci is joining forces with me to bring attention to a country with millions of children in desperate need of our help" said Madonna.

"Raising Malawi has already done tremendous work in helping these children. But we have much more to do and this event will surely bring us closer to our goal." Since 2006, Raising Malawi has been dedicated to bringing an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's one million orphans, over half of whom have been orphaned by AIDS. Co-founded by Madonna, Raising Malawi provides thousands of children with physical assistance, long-term sustainability, and psycho-social programs to address their emotional needs through several community-based projects including orphan care centers, orphanages, medical clinics, crisis nurseries, feeding programs and a soon-to-come girls' boarding school. Gucci has been a UNICEF corporate partner since 2004, starting with a local holiday event in Los Angeles, and growing to a global campaign in over twenty countries in 2005. The Gucci campaign supports UNICEF programs in Malawi and Mozambique, where over one million children have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Gucci's support has enabled UNICEF to provide lifesaving healthcare, protection, clean water and education to orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS. "AIDS is one of the most devastating public health problems in recent history," said Caryl Stern, President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "Every day, 6,000 children lose a parent to AIDS, and 1,400 children die from AIDS. We can't thank Gucci and Madonna enough for their commitment to helping UNICEF fight the battle against HIV and AIDS. By helping us raise funds, they are helping children in Africa to survive and thrive." "We are honored to have Madonna host this very special event with us, celebrating the opening of our New York Fifth Avenue flagship store while generating funds for Raising Malawi and UNICEF," said Mark Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Gucci. "At this significant moment in Gucci's history, we are proud to continue our commitment to a cause of great importance to the company. We are inspired by the work of Raising Malawi and UNICEF - organizations that are improving life in communities devastated by HIV/AIDS, and helping thousands of children in their daily struggle to survive." The event is being entirely underwritten by Gucci, so every dollar raised will go directly to the important work of Raising Malawi and UNICEF.

Madonna, Gucci team up for Malawi charity gig

NEW YORK, Nov 15 (Reuters Life!) - Madonna is joining forces with
luxury goods maker Gucci to raise funds for orphans in Malawi, from

The U.S. singer and Gucci will host a fundraising event with dinner,

"Raising Malawi has already done tremendous work in helping these

Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie's bid to adopt David Banda from
Malawi has hit several stumbling blocks since they took the 13-month-
old boy from the African country last year. He had been placed in an
orphanage by his father after the death of his mother.

Rights groups have accused Madonna of using her fame and wealth to
circumvent the country's adoption rules although the singer has
insisted she is following the law.

Malawi's High Court is to hold a hearing next year into whether
Madonna and Ritchie are suitable parents and should adopt the child.

The New York event is expected to raise at least $2 million with
Madonna joined by a list of celebrity co-chairs in the event including
Adrien Brody, Arpad Busson, Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault,

Wall Street questions Madonna's relevance

Ahead of the Bell: Live Nation, Madonna

NEW YORK — Live Nation Inc. on Thursday is expected to provide
commentary on a high-profile partnership with Madonna, though one
analyst warned that the Material Girl's popularity may fade with time.

In October, Live Nation and Madonna revealed plans to share future
music and music-related revenue from the Madonna brand, albums,
touring, merchandising, among other sources. The deal reportedly cost
the company about $120 million, and Madonna will receive an $18 million
signing bonus and partial stock compensation.

Morgan Joseph & Co. analyst David Kestenbaum said many on Wall
Street have been in the dark regarding financial details of the deal,
but expects Live Nation to provide an update Thursday.

Kestenbaum said the deal bodes well for Live Nation's chance to
accumulate more artists, but still questioned the longevity of
Madonna's notoriety as a pop star now that she's nearing 50.

"We still have questions regarding returns on Madonna, specifically
on her popularity longevity and Live Nation's related advance payment
schedule for her talent," Kestenbaum wrote in a client note.

Kestenbaum said if Madonna is unable to live up to her persona, her CD sales and touring tickets may be affected.

"While we do not discredit the artist's high-profile name, we are
slightly cautious of her reliance on high-action, performance-oriented
concerts versus an act that is more musically relevant regardless of
age," Kestenbaum wrote.

Madonna’s plans to adopt Malawian baby girl in doubt

Madonna’s plans to adopt Malawian baby girl in doubt
November 14th, 2007 by admin

Madge and hubby Guy Ritchie had been planning to adopt 13-month-old orphan Mercy James, but her uncle John Ngalande says that he doesn’t want her to be raised by white people.

Mr Ngalande told British newspaper The People that not only was he against Mercy being taken away from her family in Malawi, but that he also didn’t want her being adopted by a white person, even if it wasn’t Madonna.

“We were told when Mercy went into the orphanage that we would be in constant contact with her and that she would come back to us after six years. I would like to stick to that. Whether it be Madonna or any other white person, I’m against our child being taken away,” Contactmusic quoted him, as telling the paper.

“I would rather we be poor and struggling with Mercy, than for her to go and live with a big white star far away,” he added.

Brit paper The Sun had revealed that the singer was planning on adding another member to the family next April, but due the controversy caused by Madonna’s adoption of toddler David Banda, she had told her lawyer in Malawi, Alan Chinula, to “cover all legal bases” this time. (ANI)

Desperately Seeking Susan" without Madonna?

No Madonna, plenty of Blondie, in West End's 'Desperately Seeking Susan'

LONDON - "Desperately Seeking Susan" without Madonna? It's either sacrilege, or a stroke of genius.

Thursday sees the West End opening of a stage musical based on the spiky-but-sweet 1985 movie that brought Madonna's bangles, bows and bad-girl attitude to a huge audience.

The story of a bored New Jersey housewife, played by Rosanna Arquette, and a downtown hipster - Madonna's breakout role - whose lives intersect through a series of wacky coincidences, it has become a cult classic, with a lively rock, rap and soul soundtrack that includes Madonna's "Into the Groove."

In the stage version, Susan is more punk than Material Girl and the songs are supplied by new wave icons Blondie, whose distinctive blend of punk, pop, reggae and rap was one of the most distinctive sounds of the late 1970s. The show features Blondie songs including "Heart of Glass," "Atomic," "One Way or Another," "Dreaming" and "The Tide Is High," as well as a new composition by frontwoman Debbie Harry.

"It's surprising the number of people who have said, 'Of course, it was Blondie music in the film, wasn't it? They were the soundtrack,' " said Emma Williams, the 24-year-old British performer who plays the title role. "It just fits so well."

"Susan" is the latest addition to a slew of "jukebox musicals" that mine the hits of an enduring musical act. London has been particularly welcoming to the genre, with ABBA musical "Mama Mia!" and Queen tribute "We Will Rock You" enjoying long runs. The West End has even found room for a Rod Stewart musical, "Tonight's the Night" and a show based on the catalogue of 1990s boy band Take That.

The new show's New York-based writer Peter Michael Marino says the film and Blondie are a natural fit. He discovered this when, as an experiment, he watched the movie to the accompaniment of Blondie's greatest hits.

"The first song was 'Dreaming,' and the opening scene is a woman who's dreaming about meeting this girl whose fantasy life she's been following in the personal ads," said Marino, whose writing credits include 1950s pulp homage, "Hollywood Nurses."

"The next scene was Susan in the hotel room finishing up with her liaison for the night, and the next track on the CD was 'Call Me.' It sort of all fell into place."

Others were equally enthusiastic, including producer Susan Gallin and Harry, who agreed to the use of Blondie's songs after reading Marino's outline for the show.

"For me, what the movie is about is a woman who fantasizes a different life, and then she gets it. Because of a number of quirky twists of fate she ends up with this life she has been fantasizing about," Gallin said. "What Peter brought was a way of making it into a musical that made perfect sense. It just seemed as though the spirit and the edge of the Blondie music worked with the emotion of the movie."

The show has had a bumpy ride to its West End premiere. It has been substantially reworked during a month of previews after a lacklustre response from early audiences. Marino concedes the process has been "terrifying," but says it has resulted in a show that is bigger, bolder and grittier than its cinematic inspiration.

"I always say the film is sort of like a Sunday-afternoon film: very soothing, very enjoyable, it sort of makes you smirk and gives you a little tickle in your heart," Marino said a few days before the show's opening night at London's Novello Theatre. "But a musical should be a Saturday-night story."

Fans of the movie will be happy that many of their favourite moments are intact - notably the scene in which Susan blow-dries her armpits in a bus-station bathroom.

But there are significant changes. Marino has set the show in 1979, rather than the mid-80s, to capture an edgier New York, before yuppies and gentrification. Musically, it was the era of the Ramones, clubs like CBGBs and Blondie, who wrote most of their hits between 1977 and 1980.

"In 1985, kids who went to New York City came from the suburbs and dressed like punks. In 1979, the kids lived in the city, because they could afford it, and they were punks," he said. "The film is glossy. The show is much dirtier and grittier."

Williams, a rising star whose West End credits include "Bat Boy" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," says her character pays homage to Madonna but is very much her own woman.

"To me, she's a combination of Debbie Harry, Madonna, Courtney Love, Shirley Manson, Gwen Stefani - the people who are individual," she said.

The show's creators say they are confident British audiences will embrace it. The movie may not be as well known here as in the United States, but British music fans made stars of Blondie before the band hit the United States big time.

"My only concern," Gallin said, "is that the British audience doesn't quite get what New Jersey means."

A problem that extends, said Marino, to some British actors.

"Actors used to come into the auditions and talk like the Sopranos," he said.

Tour Rumor gets aussies excited

Madonna To Tour Australia???!

13 November 2007

40 has just caught wind of a rumour that the Queen of pop herself,
Madonna, is planning a tour for 2008 - with Australia on the list!

has recently signed a highly publicised recording deal with Live
Nation, an international web-based company promoting concert tours and
ticket sales, claiming to "revolutionise the music industry; onstage
and online". Part of this deal would most likely involve a concert tour
at some stage!

Madonna commented on her partnership with Live
Nation earlier this year. "The paradigm in the music business has
shifted and as an artist and a business woman, I have to move with that
shift. For the first time in my career, the way that my music can reach
my fans is unlimited. I've never wanted to think in a limited way and
with this new partnership, the possibilities are endless. Who knows how
my albums will be distributed in the future? That's what's exciting
about this deal - everything is possible. Live Nation has offered me a
true partnership and after 25 years in the business, I feel that I
deserve that."

Madonna is still under contract with Warner
Music, with two albums remaining as part of her contractual
requirement. We can expect she will release a brand new album by
mid-2008, with a Greatest Hits to follow at the end of next year.

New Madonna album being finalized

Singer darren Hayes has published this news on his MySpace blog about
seeing Mike 'Spike' Stent in the studio on Friday 09 November: I
visited my friend Spike in the studio today…. He's been working on the
new M album and I hadn't seen him for 2 years. He's another Englishman
I adore. He and Willie Williams are mentors to me. What is it about the
English? They seem to dot my path like paper lanterns. Mike 'Spike'
Stent has worked on all of Madonna's studio albums since Music in 2000
as a producer or mixer - suggesting the album is in it's final stages
of production!

Madonna: Like an Icon
By Lucy O'Brien
HarperCollins, $24.95, 340 pp.

Madonna: Like an Icon is fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't go far enough.

The latest in a succession of Madonna
biographies written without the artist's direct cooperation is no
cheapo rush job assembled from press clippings. Author Lucy O'Brien is
a well-respected British music journalist whose Dusty Springfield is the definitive take on the life of a fabled, troubled diva.

The life of this book's fabled diva is
meticulously chronicled, the history buttressed and illuminated by
quotes from friends, family and associates.

But it all seems too familiar: the Michigan
cheerleader and dance student who through sheer blonde ambition becomes
the biggest female star of the '80s and then constantly reinvents
herself to maintain her star status well beyond the average career life

Maybe that's because, at least since she hit the mass-culture spotlight in 1983 with Holiday and hijacked it wholesale the next year with Like a Virgin and Material Girl,
Madonna, now 49, has lived her life in public like few other artists.
The records, tours and videos have been thoroughly documented, as have
the liaisons and the controversies (from the Sex book all the way up to the Malawi orphan adoption).

O'Brien's retelling of Madonna Louise Ciccone's
childhood is absorbing, particularly in dealing with the death of her
mother (also named Madonna) when the future star was just 5. That
forced her to take on adult duties early and set the pattern for the
legendary self-centered drive that, after considerable struggles in New
York's music and art community and a frequent use-'em-then-lose-'em
approach to lovers and professional contacts alike, helped her hit the
top. At which point we pretty much know the story.

O'Brien does a solid job of dissecting the
albums and tours. She is most interesting when offering her perspective
on what it feels like for a girl (or woman) who admires Madonna.

"Underlying her seamless pop tunes, driving her
music … is a sense of white-hot anger," O'Brien writes. "She
encountered her own worst possible scenario, becoming a victim of male
violence (a rape in New York in the '70s), and thereafter turned that
full-tilt into her work, reversing the equation at every opportunity.
This is why women respond to her on such a gut level, why so many
heterosexual men feel ambivalent."

A provocative proposition? Definitely. A bit
extreme? Maybe. There's no way to tell for sure until Madonna finally
decides to tell her own story, and that, as detailed and well reasoned
as this biography may be, is what we're still lacking.
