Madonna girl father claim rejected

The uncle and grandmother of the Malawian girl Madonna wants to adopt have threatened to seek legal action against a man claiming to be three-year-old Mercy Chifundo James's father.

In interviews in their village near Blantyre, Peter Baneti and Lucy Chekechiwa said they did not believe James Kambewa.

But Mr Baneti added that, if the claim was true, he held Mr Kambewa responsible for his sister's death shortly after she gave birth.

Mr Baneti said he would seek Mr Kambewa's arrest "should he continue to make noise".

One of Madonna's lawyers, Modechai Msisha, said Mr Kambewa's claims would have no bearing on a ruling expected any day in Madonna's appeal of a lower court's rejection of the adoption.

The lower court said Madonna failed to meet residency requirements.--
