Madonna nude painting, falls short

An oil painting depicting Madonna in the nude with her ex-husband Guy Ritchie went under the hammer.

Brian Clements, head of the McTear's auction house, said there were a few bids for the oil painting by Scottish artist Peter Howson, but none that reached the minimum requirement of 15,000 pounds ($24,277).

Bidders competed for the portrait by artist Peter Howson at an auction in Glasgow.

Painted in 2005, Madonna & Guy is one of several Howson paintings of the pop icon in a state of undress.

Madonna is joined in the work by film director Guy Ritchie from whom she split last year.

The painting shows the singer reclining and Ritchie has a hand on her thigh.

Howson is better known for his portrayals of Glasgow down-and-outs and in the early 1990s was appointed the official war artist for the Bosnia conflict.

The artist's past customers are said to have included David Bowie and Mick Jagger.

McTear's auctioneers expects the painting, which is being sold by a private collector, to fetch up to £22,000.

Brian Clements from McTear's said: "There is no doubt that the recent split of Madonna and Guy has generated increased interest in the painting.

"The painting created a huge amount of controversy when it was unveiled a few years ago and I think it's safe to say it is one of a kind."
