After nearly a week of silence—but photo ops, passport stamps and statements from Malawi officials aplenty Madonna has finally confirmed her reason for touching down in the African nation.
It's to adopt 4-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James.
"Madonna is committed to maintaining an ongoing relationship with David's Malawian roots," rep Liz Rosenberg said in a statement this morning.
The 50-year-old star and her three children, 12-year-old Lourdes, 8-year-old Rocco and 3-year-old David (who was welcomed into the then-Ritchie home back in 2006 but whose adoption was completed only last year), arrived in Malawi on Sunday to help serve as the welcome wagon for their would-be sibling.
On Monday morning, Madonna attended her first court hearing in the adoption process, but after the hourlong, closed-door session, the judge adjourned the case pending a second hearing this Friday (when, it's quite possible, another delay may arise).
While several Malawi welfare officials stepped up late last week and over the weekend confirming—and, in some cases, condemning— that the Material Mama would be expanding her single-parent brood, today's statement marks Madonna's camp's first acknowledgment of the endeavor.
Thank to Venny for this news.
thanks to KUBSTER at ICON for this info;
Madonna and her three children are in Malawi and today they made a visit to the Mphandula child care center set up by one of her charities. Madonna's adoption of David from Malawi was finalized last year.
The center, which provides primary schooling and other child care to about 4,000 children, has nicely cut lawns, swings and slides, and newly painted classrooms.
This was the first time she had seen the day care center finished. On her last visit in 2007, construction had just started. When she was asked by reporter what she thought on the progress made, Madonna gave the thumbs up showing her approval.
In one room, Madonna gave tried basket-weaving along with a few local woman and David was given a cow-skin guitar as a gift. Her latest adoption hearing for 4 year old Mercy James has been delayed until Friday, as she has been getting flack for trying to fast-track the adoption of another child using her money and status.--
Madonna arrived in court today, the judge has adjourned for a ruling on Friday, Madonna hopes to bring Mercy back with her to nyc.

The 50-year-old entertainer is reportedly in Malawi to adopt her second child, Mercy James.

The singer, 50, was accompanied by her daughter Lourdes, 12, and sons Rocco, 8, and David, 3, whom she adopted from Malawi last year. And she and Lourdes visited Chinkhota Village, where Madonna has purchased a large tract of land to construct a girls' school there, which sources say is modeled on the Leadership Academy for Girls that Oprah Winfrey built in South Africa.
Although the village chief thanked the singer for her "generosity," some residents were less enthusiastic amid fears that they would lose their ancestral lands and crop fields.
"We are told to leave our gardens after this year's harvest; we are told our houses are to be pulled down – but nobody is talking about compensation," said Esinati Nkhoma, a local mother of four. "Where will we move to?"
A senior government official said issues of compensation for the land are being handled by Raising Malawi, the charity established by Madonna.
When a journalist asked Madonna whether she was worried about the land concerns, she shouted back, "No!" Later, Madonna and Lourdes were heard asking villagers "Muli bwanji?," which translates to "How are you?" in Malawi's native tongue, Chichewa.
On Monday morning the star is scheduled to appear before a high court judge to process her second adoption. When a bystander asked, "Are you adopting another kid from Malawi?" she replied, "I don't know."
But courts records show she plans to adopt 3-year-old Mercy James, whose single teenage mother died at age 18.

LILONGWE - US pop star Madonna has arrived in impoverished Malawi, airport officials say, to file documents allowing her to adopt a second Malawian child, this time a three-year-old girl.
A private jet carrying the pop star and her entourage landed at Lilongwe's Kamuzu international airport shortly before 2pm on Sunday (2300 AEDT).
The plane landed on a runway reserved for cargo planes, far from waiting journalists and photographers. The singer left the airport in a convoy of four vehicles.
Madonna is due in court on Tuesday to file adoption papers for three-year-old Mercy James from an orphanage in southern Malawi, a court official said. The singer had spotted her during her first visit to Malawi, in 2006. She adopted a Malawian child, David Banda, that year.
His biological father, Yohane Banda, told AFP on Sunday he would be allowed to see his son for the first time in three years.
"I have been told by officials of Raising Malawi (a charity established by the singer after the adoption) that I will see my son. I am excited about it," Banda, 34, said in a telephone interview.
He said he last saw David in 2006, when he also met Madonna at the high court where she was filing documents for the adoption.
The pop singer was accused of fast-tracking the process because Malawi does not have inter-country adoption legislation.
Madonna was quoted in local reports as saying she wanted David "to stay connected to his Malawi culture... to keep him closely connected to his cultural heritage".
Her lawyer, Alan Chinula, will be filing adoption papers for Mercy James on Monday in Lilongwe high court.

LILONGWE, Malawi (AP) — Madonna toured an impoverished village Sunday in Malawi, the central African nation where officials said she was expected to begin proceedings this week to adopt a young girl.
Madonna, casually dressed with a white fedora, walked through the village of Chinkhota holding the hand of her 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes. Dozens of reporters looked on.
The 50-year-old pop star refused to answer questions about reports that she was in Malawi to adopt a four-year-old girl. She said it was "amazing" to be back in the country where she runs a charity organization and from where she adopted her son David last year.

Madonna has split from Jesus Luz following a fairly big fight over her lack of commitment, a report claims.
According to The Mirror, the 50-year-old irritated her Brazilian boyfriend by refusing to meet his family on May 10, which is Mother's Day in his home country.
The argument apparently resulted in the singer deciding to call time on her relationship with 22-year-old Luz.
"It was a huge wakeup call for Madonna that Jesus really isn't the man for her," a source told the newspaper. "Things were moving too fast and they were practically living in each other's pockets.(. she only asked him to live with her and he thought they were committed. What WAS he thinking!!))
According to reports it was a huge wake up call for Madonna.. no doubt. waking up to the reality that his mom is fifteen years younger than she is MIGHT be an eye opener.source; HOT GOSSIP
NOW hold on a second, Guy Ritchie. There's trading down and there's trading down. And divorcing Madonna only to be spotted with Geri Halliwell -- even if she was only hanging out at your pub -- smacks of settling for hamburger when you used to eat steak.
There should be a very clear celebrity caste system to keep Guy away from women who have called their childrenBluebell Madonna, especially in his tender post-divorce state. In the past few years Old Ginger Spice has done Kabbalah, fake lesbianism, got herself some Madonna biceps (and lost them) and has been making some "spiritual" Earth Mother noises. One Guy Ritchie, slightly used, would be just the perfect addition to her Material Girlshrine. You know she'd kill to be in one of his crap films. Geri was at the premiere of The Boat That Rocked this week. But if the rumours are anything to go by it's been more like The Hand That Rocked the Cradle.
Of course, Madonna herself will find all this hilarious, and she'd love it if Geri and Guy did get together. For one thing it would show that Guy is not really over her, but in a pathetic, rather than a romantic way (like if Pete Dohertyhad rebounded with Marianne Faithfull and the two of them started going to rock festivals). For another thing it would make her dalliances with Latino toy boys look a bit less regressive. If there is one thing naffer than Madonna Junior, it's Jesus. Of course, in our hearts we know it could never work. Geri and Guy would both have the same problem. They're both still hankering after Madonna.
Guy Ritchie is dating socialite Petrina Khashoggi, the glamorous daughter of former Tory MP Jonathan Aitken.
The 40-year-old – who was divorced from Madonna earlier this year – has been quietly stepping out with the leggy blonde for the past five weeks.
According to sources close to Miss Khashoggi, a former model who is trying to launch a TV career, the 29-year-old is 'smitten' with the film director and has visited his London home several times.
Malawi High Court has allocated Judge Justice Esmie Chombo to preside over the second adoption by the US pop star Madonna in the country from Monday.
Madonna is expected to jet at Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe on Sunday around 2pm in readiness for the hearing of the adoption of Chifundo James.
According to court documents sourced by Nyasa Times, Chifundo was under the custody of Mrs Antje Saakje Chikhwaza after her mother, Mwandida Maunde died on 5 February, 2006 at Kavinthiwe Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi, Zomba.
Chifundo was born on 22 January, 2006.
The consent to allow adoption, according to papers logged at the court is Peter Bennett.
High Court officials in Lilongwe have also been put on alert on the expectation of an army of journalists on Monday with Madonna's appearance to have her adoption case examined.
"We are certain that Madonna, she's coming here on Monday, probably around eight-thirty in the morning," High Court watchman Charles Boli said.
"Actually it's about the adoption case, and no media coverage, the reporters will not be allowed inside, only the parties involved will be allowed to go inside the court."
The four year girl who would be a sister to David Banda whose earlier adoption sparked controversy as she battled accusations that she used her celebrity status to circumvent Malawian adoptions laws, is being kept at the luxury Kumbali Lodge.
Madonna will spend time with Chifundo on Sunday at the Lodge and is hoping to fly out with her to US if the court gives her a lee way on Monday.
According to British tabloid, The Sun, Lucy Chekechiwa, 61, Chifundo's grandmother described Madonna's interest in her granddaughter as "stealing".
"Why doesn't this singer pick other children? It is stealing. I want to go to court, I won't let her go," the paper quoted her.
Mrs Chekechiwa, according to the paper, claimed it had been agreed the child would go to her when she reaches the age of six.--
You do get into the headlines when you mention her name so good job Dominic. But your points are rather pointless, Madonna doesnt look for your advice. Shes done pretty good for herself.

Madonna's lawyer has confirmed the singer will file adoption papers in a Malawi court next week amid reports the toddler she tried to adopt last year has been moved from an orphanage to await collection by the star.
The singer will arrive in the African nation on Saturday to begin her quest to bring a second Malawian child into her family. She finalized the adoption of her son David Banda last year, after two years of legal wrangling.
She will then file official documents to begin the adoption process in a courthouse in the capital city of Lilongwe on Monday, according to her attorney Alan Chinula.
Chinula says, "We are expected to be in court on Monday to file papers for a possible adoption."
Meanwhile, 4-year-old Mercy James was reportedly removed from her orphanage near Blantyre, Malawi, earlier this week and subsequently placed under a nanny's care at Kumbali Lodge, outside Lilongwe, where the singer has stayed on previous visits.
A source tells Britain's Daily Mail, "Mercy has been handed over to Madonna's people, who are already at the lodge, and is being cared for by a nanny.
"They are waiting for Madonna to arrive so mother and daughter can be united and then Madonna is expected to take Mercy with her when she leaves."
Madonna was alleged to have signed paperwork to adopt Mercy last year, but the reports never came to fruition, despite the little girl's grandfather telling a U.S. tabloid, "It breaks our hearts to know she will leave us, but adoption is best for her."Madonna is already mom to adopted David Banda, 3, Rocco, 8, from her marriage to Guy Ritchie and Lourdes, 12, whose father is Carlos Leon

I was agog reading that Madonna’s divorce from Guy Ritchie and her subsequent “flings” with Alex Rodriguez and Jesus Luz have become impediments to her adopting a second impoverished child in Malawi.
The government there seems to frown on Madonna’s change of status and her “lifestyle.” She was wed to director Ritchie when her adoption of little David Banda happened.
Maybe Malawi should get over itself! Africa — rife with civil unrest, corruption, genocide, disease and the rape and mutilation of children — is having a problem with Madonna’s morals!?
From the outside looking in, I suppose Madonna’s recent love conquests seem a bit – lurid. That said, I have yet to see one paparazzi picture of Madonna in disarray, out of control or engaging in a “public display of affection” with her assumed lovers. What I’ve seen is Madonna bringing little David out of a kabbala service. Wicked woman! Burn her at the stake!
I say – let Madonna and other rich celebrities adopt as many poor children as they want. She is, for instance, pouring millions into Malawi. And if you’ve seen her documentary on that blighted spot, you know they need all the help they can get. Her motives? Madonna’s motives? I don’t really care if she — or anybody else who is doing “a good deed in a naughty world” — is sincere or not. Sincerity won’t buy food or medicine. So, in that spirit of healthy cynicism, let’s have even more phonies who are intent on helping the world! The rest of us can sit around, cluck, tsk, point and complain.
A MELBOURNE nanny has told how the strain of working 24 hours a day, seven days a week for Madonna drove her to the brink.
A week after she was sacked, Angela Jacobsen arrived home yesterday with nothing but kind words for the pop star.
But her Facebook website told a different story.
"Not putting up (with) this s--- any more," a furious Jacobsen wrote last month.
- Would you want to be Madonna's nanny? Tell us in the comments below
"Never have, never will. Standing up for my rights regardless of consequence. Sick of always being the one who compromises."
The next day she wrote: "You know the score!!! No one messes with my party."
A month earlier, as she prepared for a weekend off, Ms Jacobsen vowed to "make the most of my 48 f---ing hours" of freedom.
Ms Jacobsen was dismissed on the spot last week after she gave notice to Madonna that she intended to resign.
The party-loving 29-year-old played down her differences with the Material Girl.
"I think every job has tough moments but (they were) nothing out of the ordinary," she said. "I have had a fantastic time. This is amicable, there is no hard feelings on either side."
Ms Jacobsen, who played 24-hour nursemaid to Madonna's adopted African son David Banda, was witness to the pop star's bitter split with her husband Guy Ritchie last year.
Madonna was flying back to Malawi this weekend hoping to finally adopt the little girl she has longed for. Her determination to adopt orphan Mercy James, 4, was said to have been a major cause of conflict between her and Ritchie.
While Ms Jacobsen's website postings paint Madonna in an unflattering light, they also reveal the jet-set lifestyle of a pop star's nanny.
She spent Christmas at a UK country estate, New Year at a resort in the Maldives, then flew to Los Angeles in February, visiting Disneyland and other theme parks.
The nanny's website made an apparent reference to one of David's milestones.
"Took my little man to his first swimming class without me in the water today!" she said on January 13.
On March 19 she made the revelation that she would be leaving New York for good, saying it "was sudden and unexpected"."Highly qualified & experienced nanny seeking work!" she said. "Who wants me?! I'll survive, they breed them tough in Australia
Pop star Madonna is to travel to Malawi in a bid to adopt a baby girl called Mercy James, officials have said.
The Reuters news agency was told that the child has "no father and mother, they both died", and an assessment was completed on Thursday.
The 50-year-old is expected to arrive at the weekend and attend a procedural hearing at the High Court on Monday.
The 14-month-old baby will be a sister to David Banda, the first child Madonna adopted from the African country.
The official adoption of the little boy was confirmed last year.
She brought the child back to the UK from an orphanage in the country in 2006.
An official at the Malawian department of women and child welfare told the BBC's Raphael Tenthani that the pop star had already filed adoption papers and her case could be heard as early as next week.
The official later told the Reuters news agency: "We expect her over the weekend or earlier than that... but without a doubt she is coming before the end of this month."
Madonna's spokeswoman in New York, Liz Rosenberg, would not comment.
Her lawyer in Malawi, Alan Chinula, also declined to comment.
However, a US government official speaking under condition of anonymity told Reuters news agency that an adoption bid was under way.
Writing in response to e-mailed questions from Nation readers last week, Madonna said: "Many people - especially our Malawian friends - say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister.
"It's something I have been considering."
Critics accused the Malawian government of sidestepping laws banning foreign adoptions in order to allow the celebrity to take 13-month-old David home with her.
After the adoption was legalised, Madonna said the difficulties had arisen because "this adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi".
She hoped it would make it easier for others to adopt from the country and explained: "I am the template or the role model, so to speak, for future adoptions."
The star also has two biological children - Rocco, her son with former husband Guy Ritchie, and Lourdes, whose father is Carlos Leon.
Film director Ritchie and Madonna's divorce was finalised in November.
Malawi does not as a rule approve adoptions for single or divorced people, but the official at the country's welfare department said that each case was considered on merit.

1) Would you consider an Asian leg for Madonna's next tour?
Madonna loves Asia and definitely would love to go back.
2) What are the plans, if any, for a Sticky & Sweet Tour DVD/CD Release? Will it include a tour documentary?
We plan on having the DVD/CD come out in the fall, hopefully in November. Nathan Rissman shot hours and hours of b-roll. We will edit it down and definitely include highlights in the DVD.
3) Now that Madonna has decided to extend her "Sticky and Sweet" tour, is there any chance for her to release a 4th single off her 'Hard Candy' album?
I don't see that happening.
4) Could you tell us more about the new Greatest Hits to be released by Warner Bros? Will it include unreleased tracks? Is there a release date available?
We are trying to get two new tracks on the album. But not sure if they should be "never before heard" gems, or simply start from scratch. She is thinking about doing something dance and up tempo, so stay tuned....
5) Will this summer's show be the exact same as last year's? Will Madonna make some changes to the set list, costumes?
Mostly it will be the same, with an added surprise song to the show. Again, stay tuned.
7) What is your best memory with Madonna?
My best memory? Too many to mention. I've been with Madonna for over half my life. My favorite moments are when we are alone, taking a walk through the countryside together or having dinner together. I do have fond memories of when I first became friends with Madonna. I was such a kid who knew so little , yet she took my hand and showed me the world. It's been an amazing ride.
8) Do you know what Madonna thinks of her fan club and all of her devoted fans there?
She loves her fans. Honestly everything she does she considers her fans. I can give you an example from tour -
When she did the L.A. Dodger Stadium show the whole front of the stage broke the night before the show. We almost cancelled. When I said "don't worry, everything will be fine no one will care", she responded "no my fans will care, they notice everything!" She doesn't want to do anything less than amazing for her fans. But at the same time, she didn't want to let down her fans by canceling the show, so at 9 pm the night before, she said the show must go on. All these decisions are always made with the fans in mind. She has seen many of Iconers showing up at each show and she really appreciates it - you know who you are!
9) Will Madonna release some unreleased songs or demos from her past albums at some point?
At some point, would love to do something amazing with the remixes and demos. Thanks to you guys for many of your suggestions on this, they are all being considered.
10) Why wasn't Australia included in the tour itinerary and will she visit Australia anytime soon?
Madonna really needs to go to Australia!! Its a must...and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we get there next time Madonna tours. Unfortunately it didn't work out for this tour. She appreciates her Aussie fans coming to many of the shows. Israel never missed one show in Europe or South America and he waved his Australian flag at every single show. We are long over due for a trip down under and apologize for that, it will happen.
