Madonna threw Mercy Fantastic Party

Mercy, you had a really fantastic fifth birthday! Madonna dropped over $2,000 for your party!

Being Madonna's little girl sure has its perks!  Little Mercy, Madonna's adopted daughter from Malawi, had her fifth birthday at Kidville on Columbus Avenue in NYC.

The venue offers a "Big Blowout Birthday Party" for $2,195, which includes shutting down the entire private party zone for a two-hour party, a party with pizza and juice for 20 kids, a personalized birthday cake, balloons, a jumpy castle, and, of course, four "birthday party leaders" to deal with the kids and the mess.

Page Six reports that Jessica Seinfeld brought her daughter (with Jerry SeinfeldSaschato the party. And while Mercy had a TON of options for her party theme, we wonder if she followed her super famous mom's footsteps and chose the "Boogie-Down Dance Party" or the "Calling All Future Oscar Winners Party!"

Near miss as Madonna dines just 350 yards away from ex-husband Guy Ritchie

All she had to do was head west and take three lefts.

But unsurprisingly Madonna decided not to take the one-minute, 350 yard trip to ex-husband Guy Ritchie's pub as she dined at the swanky Scott's restaurant in Mayfair.

The singer headed out for dinner with her designer friend Tom Ford last night, while Guy, 41, enjoyed an evening with friends at The Punchbowl on the parallel street.

GUY RITCHIE

Near miss: Madonna went for dinner at Scott's restaurant in Mayfair last night, just 350 yards away from Guy Ritchie who was at his pub, The Punchbowl

No doubt the 51-year-old singer was only too aware that her former flame would have been lurking close by.

After all during their relationship, she spent many a night there with the film director.

Following her catch-up with American fashion man Mr Ford, the mother-of-four jumped into a waiting car and, according to onlookers, had a chuckle to herself as she left.

Dapper: The singer dined with American designer Tom Ford

Perhaps the star was amused by a message on her phone, which she was seen looking at at she sat in the back of her getaway motor.

She dressed for the occasion in a stylish long black coat, complete with matching trousers, fishnet tights, heels and sunglasses.

Her dinner date Tom was also impeccably attired in a sharp grey suit, which he teamed with a black cravat.

But Sherlock Holmes director Ritchie was not out to impress anyone, and wore casual jeans, trainers and a battered-up waxed jacket.

Call on me: Madonna left in the back of her chauffeur-driven car

Following the success of his latest film, it looks like fans could be in for a second dose of the Victorian tale.

Ritchie has never ruled out doing a sequel, but said he would see how the first film did before making a decision.

The movie has so far taken $389 million (£240million) worldwide at the box office since its Boxing Day release and has earned Robert Downey Jr., who plays the famed literary detective, a surprise Golden Globe.

Now Ritchie is said to have set aside plans to direct film Lobo to clear his schedule for a Sherlock Holmes follow-up, according to producer Joel Silver.

S&S artwork on Amazon

From Jeremy:

I have to say, I think they nailed it!  Design looks great, the triple Madonnas reminds me of the GI2M single cover.

Also, I'm sure everyone noticed, but Guy O's photo book was pushed back to the first week of February...

So along with the D&G campaign, I think we have a cool little M-blitz coming up these next few months!

US regulator clears music merger

Madonna
Madonna is one of the artists signed to Live Nation

The merger of ticket agent Ticketmaster and concert promoter Live Nation has been approved by the US Department of Justice.

The newly formed company will be known as Live Nation Entertainment Inc.

But Ticketmaster must license its ticketing software to a competitor, and to sell a subsidiary that handles tens of millions of tickets a year.

It is hoped this will create competition in the worlds of ticketing contracts and concert promotion work.

'Selling platform'

In the UK, the merger had been approved by the Competition Commission in December, reversing a previous opinion that the deal could lead to music fans paying more for tickets to see live performances.

Meanwhile in the US, consumer groups, ticket resellers and some politicians have been worried that the new firm will control too much of the concert-going experience.

The new firm will promote concerts, and sell tickets, beer and parking, as well as putting out albums and managing an artist roster that includes U2, Madonna, Jay-Z and the Eagles.

Michael Rapino, chief executive of Live Nation and the newly merged company, said the coming together would create "a more diversified company with a great selling platform for artists and a stronger financial profile that will drive improved shareholder value over the long term".

Madonna: Great Material

Madonna turns on the waterworks in Dolce & Gabbana's spring ad campaign.

FOR SPRING, MADONNA TRIES ON A NEW ROLE: THE FACE OF DOLCE & GABBANA

Leaning across a burgundy velvet divan in the leopard-print drawing room of his company's Milan headquarters, Stefano Gabbana thumbs through a pile of xeroxed images. "This is crazy!" he enthuses, waving one page in the air. "Madonna washing dishes? This will go down in history!"

The designer may be overstating things, but a housewife performing mundane daily chores certainly represents a new identity for the world's most famous chameleon. And the photograph Gabbana is so excited about is just one of nine black and white Steven Klein shots depicting Madonna in her latest incarnation. The singer-cum-actress can also be seen wielding a broom, peeling vegetables and eating spaghetti with her fingers. Together the images make up Dolce & Gabbana's spring campaign, which launches worldwide in February.

The overall aesthetic of the ads is old-world Italian—with white lace tablecloths, frilly curtains and plenty of pasta—which was a deliberate choice on the part of the designers. "Twenty-five years ago, when we debuted, we made our mark with a very Italian collection, and for spring we felt the time was right to go back to our roots," says Domenico Dolce.

Since the fashion duo first met Madonna—who, notwithstanding her Britishisms and flirtations with Latin, Indian and Jewish cultures over the years, is, of course, Italian-American—in 1991, a friendship has developed. Despite that bond, Dolce and Gabbana had long resisted approaching the star about representing their brand. "Strangely enough, there was a sort of fear on our behalf of asking Madonna to do anything businessy," admits Gabbana. "We thought it could impact our relationship, and Madonna is one of the few people we're really in awe of."

This past year, however, the three grew closer—Madonna filmed part of the video for her single "Celebration" at their Milanese runway venue, Metropol; the designers hosted the after-party for her concert in the city; and Dolce and Madonna, whose birthdays are three days apart, had a combined celebration in Portofino in August. Teaming up for an ad campaign felt like a natural next step.

Still, despite all the quality time spent together, the designers retained their aforementioned sense of awe, which came through in the numerous tweets that Gabbana, a prolific social networker of late (he tweets about this interview just nanoseconds after it ends), sent into cyberspace to keep fans in the loop about the campaign's progress: "I spoke with Steven…next week in NY," he wrote. And later, "We are at the last shot." Then, "M, she's simply beautiful…."

The photographs were taken in a former lay convent in uptown Manhattan. "There are many Italian symbols in the images, ones the whole world recognizes and identifies with," says Gabbana, pointing to the cross Madonna wears around her neck as well as the brass bed, a typical sight in Sicilian homes. Food imagery also looms large. "It's healthy and sensual," says Gabbana. "They say there's a connection between food and sex."

Madonna for Dolce & Gabbana

Madonna found inspiration in mid-20th-century Italian films.

For inspiration, Madonna, Klein and the designers watched old Italian movies and found themselves particularly drawn toBellissima, Luchino Visconti's neorealist 1951 film starring Anna Magnani as a woman desperate to make her young daughter a star. On set, Madonna channeled Magnani's raw sensuality in a wardrobe of leopard prints, crocheted tops, plunging necklines and a sweet floral skirt, some pieces straight off the spring runway and others customized to suit her taste. "It really didn't matter that she wanted a black bodysuit instead of a floral one," says Gabbana. "It's a question of mood more than the clothes."

Madonna, who was visited by her children Lourdes and Rocco during the shoot, went into character every time she stepped in front of the lens, according to Gabbana. One photo depicts her staring melancholically into the distance, tears streaming down her cheeks, after reading a letter from a loved one. "She was really crying!" says Gabbana. "It wasn't fake!"

While in New York, the designers also checked on the progress of Dolce's new penthouse in Chelsea and embarked on a five-hour shopping marathon to stock up on red and green iPhones, Kiki de Montparnasse sheets and Dean & DeLuca muffins. And on the plane home, as he started to unwind, Gabbana typed one last Twitter blast about the undertaking: "To have Madonna in our campaign is a dream come true."

Tourism Minister free VIP tickets to Madonna show were part of his duties

Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov and his wife received free VIP tickets to the Madonna concert last September, Haaretz has learned, despite clear instructions from the attorney general that free tickets are considered an illegal gift.

The ministry said Misezhnikov was there as part of his ministerial duties.

The director of Misezhnikov's office, Limor Barzilai, and spokesman Amnon Lieberman, received tickets without seats, and senior ministry official Uzi Gafni had two regular tickets upgraded to VIP status for free. VIP tickets to the concert sold for NIS 2,500 each.

In late November, concert producer Shuki Weiss sent a letter to the ministry, noting that he gave the officials 25 tickets, most of them VIP tickets. Last week Haaretz asked the ministry why it had received so many expensive tickets. Two days later, Weiss sent a letter to Barzilai confirming five tickets, plus one for a bodyguard, had been delivered.

What happened to the other 20 tickets? Weiss declined to tell Haaretz how many tickets the ministry received. The ministry said it received only six tickets, two of which were upgraded, and that it paid full price for the bodyguard's VIP ticket.

By accepting the tickets, Misezhnikov appears to have violated the Gifts Law, which prohibits public servants, including elected and appointed officials, from accepting gifts. Gifts are defined as "an asset, a service or other benefits granted without compensation."

In 2005, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz responded to the practice of officials receiving free tickets to soccer games by stating that this falls into the category of illegal gifts.

However, Mazuz added that free tickets do not violate the gifts law if they are for a state or official public event, a charity event, or a public event with special significance and the ticket recipient is a guest of honor.

Generally speaking, Mazuz wrote, "Such events do not include regular occasions, like games and cultural events, which do not justify inviting the officials as guests of honor."

Responsibility for not violating the law rests primarily "with the official," he said. "Therefore, if there is any doubt about the circumstances of the invitation, the public servant must consult his ministry's legal adviser and act in keeping with his instructions."

Tourism Ministry spokeswoman Shira Koa said that the ministry had agreed with the producers of the concert that the event would be used to promote Israel as a safe tourism destination. "Madonna belongs to an exclusive club of mega stars, who draws thousands of fans from abroad to her concerts," the statement said.

"For this reason, the ministry authorized an agreement with the producers that would give the ministry video and stills footage of the singer and her entourage, both during the concerts and her visits to tourist sites in Israel, to be used in international marketing campaigns. They also agreed to have four displays at the concert with films promoting Israel, supplied by the ministry, targeting the thousands of foreign tourists. The ministry agreed to pay NIS 56,000, not including tax, for this agreement.

"Such promotion campaigns are regular occurances both in Israel and abroad," it stated.

"The team that worked on the project - the minister's media adviser Amnon Lieberman, and project manager Limor Barzilai, attended the concert with the ministry's permission, as part of their work. The ministry official responsible for the project, Uzi Gafni, who had purchased two tickets for the concert, had them upgraded, with the ministry's permission, to VIP tickets."

"The minister and his spouse, having obtained ministry confirmation, was also present at the concert. A separate ticket was purchased by the ministry for the minister's bodyguard."

Concert producer Shuki Weiss declined to comment.

Madonna rehersal footage from CBS on Hope for HAITI

mtv: Madonna brings classic like a prayer to HOPE for HAITI

Backed by a choir, Madonna performed her 1989 single "Like a Prayer" at the "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon on Friday (January 22). She performed in the telethon's New York studio, as did Bruce Springsteen, Shakira and Sting.

The arrangement of "Like a Prayer" took its cues from the original version's instructions to "let the choir sing," with the only non-vocal instrumentation provided by a guitarist and a keyboard player. It was a shining performance, with the choir serving as a perfect counterpoint to Madonna's vocals.

Last week, Madonna endorsed the relief efforts of the charity organization Partners in Health, donating $250,000 toward their work with victims of the Haitian earthquake. Partners in Health works to bring modern medical care to the world's poorest communities and it has had a presence in Haiti for 20 years.

"My prayers are with the people of Haiti," she said in a statement on her Web site. "I can't imagine the terrible pain and suffering they are experiencing. Sadly the depths of the tragedy are just becoming known and the need for our support grows more urgent with every passing moment.

"I urge all of my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can," she continued. "We must act now."

Learn more about what you can do to help with earthquake-relief efforts in Haiti, and for more information, see Think MTV. Visit HopeForHaitiNow.org or call (877) 99-HAITI to make a donation now.

iTunes customers can exclusively pre-order the "Hope for Haiti Now" full-performance album ($7.99) and the full two-hour video telecast ($1.99). Pre-orders will be delivered in the days following the telethon. Individual audio performances will also be available for purchase and download for 99 cents each in the days following the telethon. Apple, the record labels and the artists will donate their share of the proceeds to Haiti relief funds managed by "Hope for Haiti Now" charities, including the Red Cross and Wyclef's Yele Haiti foundation. Performances will also be available for purchase in the days following the event through Amazon's MP3 service and Rhapsody, through distribution provided by INgrooves.

MARSEILLE Stadium owners suing Madonna for 1 million euros

Due to the accident that claimed the lives of 2 workers and injured several people, they are seeking 1 million in damages cause they had to cancel several games that would have taken place at the stadium as well as costs of rapairs and damages caused by the accident. The courts will decide on a verdict on January 20th.

Letter from Madonna

I'm sure that you, like me, have been heartbroken by the images coming out of Haiti since the devastating earthquake shook the impoverished nation on Tuesday.

My prayers are with the people of Haiti. I can't imagine the terrible pain and suffering they are experiencing. Sadly, the depths of the tragedy are just becoming known and the need for our support grows more urgent with every passing moment.

I have given a donation of $250,000 to assist Haiti's earthquake victims through Partners in Health, one of Haiti's leading health care providers. I urge all of my friends and fans around the world to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can.

Please donate to Partners in Health now:

http://www.raisingmalawi.org/partnersinhealth

Many of you will remember Dr. Paul Farmer, a founding director of Partners in Health, from my film, "I Am Because We Are." Paul is a medical anthropologist and a physician who has dedicated his life to treating some of the world's poorest populations.

Paul has been working alongside Haitians for decades, empowering them to improve their own communities. His dedication to Haiti and his transformative work there has inspired my own work in Malawi.

I realize I've asked for your help before. But when the suffering of tens of thousands of people comes into our homes and touches us the way the situation in Haiti has, I believe we are called to act.

Right now, Partners in Health is rushing to provide medical supplies and additional staff to the 120 doctors and hundred of nurses they already have on the ground in Haiti. Supplies are quickly running out.

I'm inspired by Partners in Health, and I whole-heartedly support their work. Please join me in supporting their relief efforts, which are needed more now than ever before.

http://www.raisingmalawi.org/partnersinhealth

We cannot sit idly by and watch the suffering of so many. We must act now.

Thank you for your support,

Madonna

Madonna dumps Jesus Luz for A-Rod

With Kate Hudson out of the way, Madge swaps toyboys

Friday, 15 January 2010

One of the worst kept celebrity love secrets is out in the open: Madonna and A-Rod are back on.

But then, did anyone - including A Rod's last girlfriend, actress Kate Hudson - ever really believe their relationship was off?

Several US sources who've spoken to  have confirmed that Madonna and New York Yankees baseball player Alex Rodriguez, 34, have always maintained close contact, especially since his split with Kate, 30, last month.

He's even been bragging to pals about his 'special bond' with Madonna.

'It's an open secret around anyone who knows Alex and Madonna that they're still sweet on each other,' says Now's source.

'He's infatuated with her - always has been.'

The 51-year-old queen of pop has branded 22-year-old Brazilian model Jesus 'clingy and boring'. She has a history with A-Rod - she turned to him after her marriage to Guy Ritchie 41, fell apart.

Kate Hudson was reported to have given A-Rod his marching orders because 'his heart belongs to Madonna', even though the singer has never admitted to being involved in a relationship with him.

This is partly because he was going through a messy divorce with Cynthia Rodriguez for much of 2008.

'Alex was worried about the damage a romance with Madonna would do to his reputation,' says our source.

'She obviously didn't want the attention either, first and foremost because of her split with Guy. But another part of it was the thrill she got from sneaking Alex in and out of her New York apartment.'

See the full story about Madonna in Now magazine dated 18 January 2010 - out now!
