Madonna and Ellen are cousins

I am feeling a major coffee tale dance party brewing people ... major!

The new NBC show "Who Do You Think You Are?" features celebrities who have agreed to find out their family history, and then have it revealed to them while we all gasp in awe that they use to have an Aunt Betsy-Jean who churned butter at the original Cracker Barrel.

However, in the case of PopWrap's fave talkshow host (and least fave "Idol" judge) Ellen DeGeneres, it turns out the brilliant as all-get-out Madonna is her 11th cousin, according to genealogy researchers at Ancestry.com.

The two are linked through a common 10th great-grandfather – a Frenchman named Martin Aucoin. In the early 1600s, Aucoin's daughters Jeanne and Michele left their native country of France to settle in Nova Scotia, where both Madonna and Ellen's families remained for several generations.

This news could be just what Ellen needs to gain a little music cred on that "AI" panel -- I mean, it can't hurt!

Lola designs fashion line

Madonna's 13-year-old daughter Lourdes "did most of the work" designing her mother's new clothing line, the singer has revealed. It seems Material Girl, Madonna's 2010 juniors' line for Macy's, ought to really be called Material Girl's Girl.
Lourdes, nicknamed Lola, was introduced to fashion design by Stella McCartney. "Lola has been bothering me for ages about designing clothes," Madonna explained. "When Lola was a little girl, about 8 years old ... [Stella] started giving Lola fabrics and inviting her into her showroom and asking her opinion on things, giving her sketch books and stuff like that." As her daughter grew up, Madonna said she let her hang around photoshoots and backstage, even assisting wardrobe departments. "On this last tour she dressed all of the dancers," the singer told the Associated Press.
These days, Madonna says she is too busy to dedicate much time to fashion projects. "If Lola wasn't so completely involved in the line, designing, consulting, whatever you want to call it, I wouldn't do it," she said. "I just stand in the background and go, 'That's cool. That's not cool.'"
She elaborated further in an interview with Access Hollywood. "The most fun is when [Lola] comes into the room and ... starts going through the racks and just takes over," she said. "I just sit on the conference table and watch and let her do the work. It's nice, it's refreshing."
We suppose it is only a matter of time before the singer's other children, David Banda and Mercy James, pursue similar projects. In the meantime, Madonna scarcely remembers Lourdes is her daughter. "[When we are working] I see her more as a creative person, as an artist and less as my daughter ... And then every once in a while I remember."

AP Interviews Madonna

Madonna teams with daughter Lola on fashion line
NEW YORK — When Madonna needed inspiration for her latest fashion collection, she didn't have to look far. The pop icon teamed up with her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes to create Material Girl, an affordable juniors' clothing line that debuts at Macy's this fall.
This is not Madonna's first foray into designing. In 2007, she teamed up with H&M to create a limited edition collection, M by Madonna. This time around, her venture into fashion will be long-lasting: She has launched a new company called MG ICON which, in addition to producing the juniors' line, will also put out other collections including eyewear.
The Material Girl collection includes jeans, shoes, fingerless gloves, necklaces and other accessories. Many of the pieces are inspired by Madonna and her daughter's dance roots.
Madonna recently spoke about Material Girl, her relationship with Lourdes (nicknamed Lola) and her fashion risks and regrets.
AP: Why did you want to do a juniors' line?
Madonna: Lola has been bothering me for ages about designing clothes. Stella McCartney is a good friend of mine and she got her mind thinking when Lola was a little girl, about 8 years old. She started giving Lola fabrics and inviting her into her showroom and asking her opinion on things, giving her sketch books and stuff like that. Stella always pushed her. I have a lot of friends who are clothing designers whether it is Gaultier or Dolce and Gabbana. (Lola) has been around all of the shoots I have done and all of the campaigns I have done. She is always hanging out backstage. The last two tours I have done, she has been working in the wardrobe department. On this last tour she dressed all of the dancers.
AP: What has Lola taught you about fashion?
Madonna: I am boring basically. She reminds me of me when I was younger. She just goes for it and tries different things. It doesn't look like she thought too much about it. That is how I used to be, but after years and years of everybody commenting on the way I look and dress and being photographed, one starts to become self-conscious and starts to plan things more. You end up judging yourself more, what looks good and what doesn't.
AP: What has it been like to work with your daughter?
Madonna: It is good because she does have good taste in fashion. I respect her taste and I rarely disagree with her.
AP: Was part of you hesitant about Lola designing this line as she would be thrust into the spotlight?
Madonna: That is why I am here talking about the line and she is not. Eventually I will let her. I feel like she needs to get into high school and focus on her studies, her lessons. She got into the high school of the performing arts. She has a lot of work to do. I don't want her to be distracted. She will eventually be able to talk about it. I am going to be happy when she does because she can speak much more clearly in and in a more informed way than I can about a line she is ultimately designing. I just stand in the background and go, "That's cool. That's not cool."
AP: The clothing is affordable. Why was it important to you to keep the price low?
Madonna: When I was 13 years old, I couldn't afford designer clothes. I couldn't afford expensive clothing. When I designed a line of clothes for H&M, that was one of the things I liked so much about it, that it was really affordable. I think that is one of the nice things about it, that you can make nice clothes at affordable prices.
AP: You are known as being a fashion risk taker. Do you ever look back and wonder, "What was I thinking?"
Madonna: Yeah. I would rather not point them out. I think I had a lot of bad hair moments. In the early 80's just sometimes I wore purple lipstick or green lipstick. Clothing-wise, I am happy about the way I dressed.
AP: With your music career and with the girls' school you are building in Malawi, was part of you hesitant about taking on another project with this clothing line?
Madonna: If Lola wasn't so completely involved in the line, designing, consulting, whatever you want to call it, I wouldn't do it. Really she does most of the work, honestly.
AP: Who are Lola's fashion influences?
Madonna: Lola spent most of her childhood growing up in England. According to her, she thinks people have more style in London, especially the boys. French boys in particular have very good style, according to Lola. I think she has been very influenced by European fashion. She is very influenced by the music she listens to, different bands she is in to. She has favorite models. She takes all kinds of dance classes. She is inspired by different items people wear as dancers whether it is a hip- hop class or a jazz class or ballet class. ... Of course she is inspired by my closet. My Christian Dior shoes will go missing and then some fabulous bag I won't be able to find or my skinny jeans, the only pair that fit me are gone.
AP: Has working on this clothing line together bonded you in a different way?
Madonna: I see her more as a creative person, as an artist and less as my daughter as we are working, and then every once and a while I remembered she is my daughter.

Madonna celebrates Passover

Next week will see Madonna's children David and Mercy reunited with their biological relatives in Malawi for a very special Easter celebration.

But last night, the two were at the centre of their adopted family as they celebrated the Jewish festival of Passover.

Along with older siblings Lourdes and Rocco, their mother Madonna and her boyfriend Jesus Luz, the family arrived at the Kabbalah Centre in London.

Although baptised a Catholic, Madonna is a devotee of the faith, which follows Jewish teachings
The family dressed in black and white for the outing, with 14-year-old Lourdes in a typically fashionable ensemble.
They are spending a week in London, before flying to Malawi to celebrate Easter.

Madonna won custody of Mercy last year - three years after first falling for the child on a visit to the African country.

The adoption caused controversy after Mercy's Christian father objected.

It was initially rejected by the courts, before finally being approved.

Madonna NOT to direct daughter

Despite several articles to the contrary, MTV reports Madonna is not giving daughter Lourdes Leon a role in the film she is directing. Instead they are working on a junior fashion line.
Madonna is directing her second film, W.E. about the real-life drama surrounding England's King Edward VIII's decision in 1936 to abdicate the throne so he could marry twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, according to E! Madonna is writing the script with Alec Keshishian, who directed the multihyphenate in "Truth or Dare.
Material Girl is the name of the fashion collection, which is a collaboration between the mother and daughter duo and designers at Iconix Brand Group (Rocawear, London Fog) and kicks off with back-to-school apparel as well as footwear, handbags and jewelry. A new fragrance could follow in 2011. It will be sold exclusively in Macy's beginning in August.
Former Miramax exec Colin Vaines and David Parfitt are producing the movie. Madonna's first film directing effort, Filth and Wisdom debuted in 2008. [Variety]

M to reunite Mercys family

Madonna will reportedly reunite her adopted Malawian daughter Mercy with her real family for the first time.

The Queen of Pop will visit Africa with her children - 14-year-old Lourdes, 10-year-old Rocco and adopted son David Banda, who will get to meet his dad - so they can stay in touch with their roots.

"She promised to take them back to their homeland - she sees it as vital they understand their roots," a friend told The Sun.

"Mercy's meeting with her family will be particularly emotional as it's the first time she's seen them since last summer."

During the trip, Madonna will also start laying bricks to mark the start of building her girls' academy.

Inside the Fela! Show on Thursday

It was a family affair at "FELA!" Thursday night - Madonna and Jesus Luz looked more like a duo than ever as they took her Madgesty's children David Banda, Mercy James, and Rocco to see the Broadway hit.

"Jesus came first with all the kids and their nanny, and he looked like a father figure to them for sure," says one theater-going spy. "He had Mercy in his lap almost the entire show."

And apparently all the attention from Luz made David a little jealous - "he kept getting out of his seat and running over to Jesus," says the snitch. "The kids couldn't get enough of him."

Steve Madden to work with Madonna

Steven Madden Ltd. is about to tie up another celebrity deal.

Multiple sources told Footwear News last week the company is teaming up with Iconix Brand Group Inc. and Macy's Inc. to produce the shoes for Madonna's new Material Girl juniors' line, set to launch exclusively at Macy's in August.

Last week, the superstar and Iconix announced the formation of a joint venture called MG Icon LLC. A number of projects are expected to bow as part of the partnership, with the Material Girl line hitting first.

"Footwear and accessories are going to be an essential part of the Material Girl collection," said Iconix CEO Neil Cole. "Footwear is an easy way for juniors to change their look, and we are going to offer them a wide array of trend-right items that will fit into their style."

For their part, analysts were upbeat on Iconix's newest partnership, even though they were unsure how much of an impact it would have in the near term.

"We believe this deal offers a number of positives for the company and is a somewhat risk-free way to increase its star power and drive upside," Eric Beder, SVP at Brean Murray, Carret & Co, wrote in a note. The analyst expects Iconix to continue to aggressively pursue acquisitions to "maximize its over $200 million cash hoard."

Madonna also revealed that she is always working on new material so that she doesn't get bored.

Lourdes to star in her moms new film

Madonna is planning to give her daughter Lourdes a break in Hollywood by giving her a role in her new film, say sources.

The Material Girl's new film is based on Edward VIII and it will go on the floor in the summers in London.

The Sun quoted a source as saying, "She has arranged a small role for Lourdes."

"It's not a significant part but it will give her a good taste of life in the movie business.

"Lourdes has made it clear she wants some kind of career in the entertainment industry and her mum is more than happy to help.

"She's already an incredible dancer, thanks to years of classes and she's also been having singing training."

Madonna, who's dating 22-year-old model Jesus Luz, had earlier refused Lourdes a.k.a. Lola to star in a Harry Potter film when she was offered a role in 2007

Kiss bassist and frontman Gene Simmons has been showing the love for Lady GaGa.

During a recent interview he said he'd take theTelephone singer over Madonna any day.  "We appreciate GaGa and everything.

"Anybody that gets visual on stage and is in your face, she's the most exciting thing I've seen in a decade."

Eric Singer
, Kiss' drummer, added, "She's done what Madonna did back in the '80s.  That's what I think is great about her. She's always changing it up, keeping it interesting.

Madonna to Work With Jason Derulo

Madonna and Jason Derulo are going to make beautiful music together. Jason who once supported Lady GaGa in the first leg of her North American Monster Ball tour confirmed that matter.

"I'm about to work with Madonna, and I've been watching her for years," the male singer/songwriter told Us Weekly. "I would love to be a part of another reinvention. She's been able to reinvent herself time and time again. I'll probably be part of that."

Madonna is currently working on her next studio installment to follow up her 2008 effort "Hard Candy". She has worked with producer/disc jokey David Guetta in a new song. "That's done, the single will be out very soon and it's amazing, I'm very happy," the DJ said in an interview earlier this month.

Jason Derulo, meanwhile, has released his debut album "Jason Derulo" in the U.S. on March 2. The record arrived at No. 11 on Billboard Hot 200 during its first week and managed to peak at No. 8 at the albums chart across the pond.
