Gala Presentations

Second-time director Madonna returns with W.E., featuring Abbie Cornish as Wally Winthrop, a woman in 1998 who is infatuated with the 1930s marriage of King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and American divorcée Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). Spanning six decades, W.E. gracefully weaves the past and present into two parallel love stories.

Programmer's Note

Madonna has always been a provocateur, regardless of her artistic pursuit. Having made her mark as a singer, actor and writer, she now confidently affirms her place as a filmmaker. W.E. traces two separate love stories — the first, one of England's most infamous romances, the second a more contemporary courtship — in a manner that is sweeping, stylish and thrilling in its scope.

At the core of this combination period-piece drama and modern romantic fantasy are two fascinating women, their stories separated by several decades. In 1998, married yet lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) develops an obsession with a love affair that changed the course of the British monarchy: that of King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and American socialite and divorcée Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). Their courtship and eventual engagement prompted a constitutional crisis and led to Edward's abdication of the throne in 1936. Wally is fascinated by Edward and Wallis' love story, but as she researches their history, she realizes that their life together was far from perfect. Meanwhile it seems that true love, however flawed, may await Wally in the here and now, in the form of a Russian-American security guard (Oscar Isaac).

Creating an intricate weave of chronologies, Madonna shifts between scenes of Wally's discoveries, both personal and historical, and scenes depicting the relationship between Edward and Wallis, from its inception through the dramatic events that challenge it. Visually, the film is a rush of gorgeous, intimate images, edited into a seductive rhythm. There are shades of Tom Ford and Julian Schnabel here. Like them, Madonna appears to have drawn on the sophisticated, cutting-edge aesthetic strategies she has used in other media to craft something remarkably cinematic.

W.E. also benefits from two potent performances. Cornish, having already made such an impression in Jane Campion's Bright Star, proves the ideal contemporary centrepiece for the film. Riseborough, as Wallis Simpson, is a revelation, displaying vulnerability and bravado, street smarts and emotional depth — winning qualities that mirror those of her director.

Director's Bio

Madonna was born in Bay City, Michigan. She has won numerous Grammy Awards and was declared the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by Guinness World Records. She is also an author and Golden Globe Award–winning actor. Her films as director are Filth and Wisdom (08) and W.E. (11).

Madonna to present Gucci award

Pop icon Madonna will present the 2011 Gucci Award for Women in Cinema during a ceremony and private dinner to be hosted by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini on Friday on the sidelines of the 68th Venice International Film Festival.

The award will honour outstanding artistic achievement by women filmmakers and the nominees span a range of disciplines including direction, production and cinematography.

This year's nominees are actress Jessica Chastain, for her work in The Tree of Life; Caroline Champetier, the director of photography of Of Gods and Men; Federica Pontremoli, screenwriter for Habemus Papam; Nansun Shi, producer of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame and Athina Tsangari, the director and producer of Attenberg.

The jury, led by Giannini, will select the final recipient.

Madonna will also be in Venice to unveil her debut directorial venture W.E, a multi-layered romantic drama about the affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson and the modern relationship between a Russian security guard and a married woman.

It's not the first time the chart-topping singer and the fashion house have joined forces for greater good. In the past, they have thrown A-list charity bashes to raise funds for Unicef and Madonna's charity initiative Raising Malawi.

Madonna signs new deal with Smirnoff Vodka even though she prefers Belvedere

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Pop star Madonna has inked a deal with Smirnoff vodka to participate in a promotion called "Global Nightlife Exchange" that will help her find a new dancer for her next concert tour. The Nightlife Exchange aims to get 10 million people to "discover, share and swap the most original nightlife experiences" in 50 different countries. Fans can enter a dance competition online with the finalists competing in front of Madonna. "What attracted me to the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project is the combination of participating in the celebration of nightlife around the world and the opportunity to discover the world's best unknown dancers," said Madonna, whose full name is Madonna Louise Ciccone, in the announcement. Smirnoff is owned by London-based beverage alcohol.

Madonna to present Britney Spears with lifetime achievement award

Singers Madonna, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are among a host of stars who will reportedly pay tribute to Britney Spears at this month's MTV Video Music Awards.

The ceremony will include a tribute to the 29 year-old, but MTV executives have yet to comment on what it will involve. However, TV producer and casting director Jonathan Woodbeck has tweeted what he thinks will happen at the show.

He wrote: 'If this lineup is legit [which I'm told it is] the tribute to Britney at the VMAs is gonna be insanely EPIC!!'

Woodbeck then listed all the artists along with the Spears tune they will perform on the night as part of a medley.

Selena Gomez will be performing Baby One More Time, Perry will sing Oops! I Did It Again, Janet Jackson is to tackle I'm A Slave 4 U, Demi Lovato will sing Toxic, Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj are thought to be performing a duet of Gimme More, Lady Gaga will take on Circus and Spears will perform a mash-up of Hold It Against Me/I Wanna Go.

Madonna will then apparently present Spears with a Lifetime Achievement award.

MTV has yet to confirm or deny the reports.

The MTV Video Music Awards is set to take place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on August 28.

Abbie Cornish -on working with Madonna

Abbie Cornish at the Sucker Punch premiere

Abbie Cornish has said that she often felt intimidated aroundMadonna on the set of W.E.

The Sucker Punch actress revealed that W.E. director Madonna often took her to task when it came to her knowledge about current events when the cameras stopped rolling.

Cornish explained: "You need to be totally switched on to the news and current affairs to talk to her - she asks you questions all the time and expects you to be up on everything that's going on, from Libya to the latest advances in technology."

However, the 29-year-old added that Madonna knew how to unwind at the end of the day, saying: "Standing next to her after a day's shoot and drinking a Cosmo - I mean, it doesn't get better than that."

W.E. will premiere at the Venice Film Festival later this month and will also screen at the Toronto Film Festival in September

Cornish has previously told Digital Spy that Madonna is "definitely determined and quite a visionary"

Happy birthday, Madonna | M magazine: A madonna encounter

Pop star and songwriter Betty Boo recalls her first encounter with Madonna

The phone rang in my suite at The Royalton Hotel in New York: 'Hi, this is Madonna,' the voice said. I thought it was one of my Boo-ettes playing a prank. But it wasn't. Madonna herself had heard I was in town and asked if I would like to go out to dinner.

Our connection was Seymour Stein. He had famously discovered Madonna and signed her to his Sire Label. Later, he signed me and, though she had said she was a huge fan of mine, I always took this with a pinch of salt. After all, I was just a girl from Shepherds Bush who made records in her bedroom!

I took a taxi to her apartment and she answered the door. I couldn't believe it — Madonna answering her own door? Even the Queen doesn't do that at Buckingham Palace.

Madonna and I had a drink in her amazing apartment and then we jumped in her limo to her favourite eatery. It was packed full of Hip Hop and R 'n' B luminaries — this photo was actually taken by the late, great Tupac Shakur.

Madonna talked endlessly about music; she said she wanted to sign me to her new Maverick label. This was so exciting and the idea of the two of us working together was a dream come true.

At the end of the evening she dropped me back off at my hotel and I gave her my leopard print jacket (the one I am wearing in the picture). I was thrilled to see her wearing it a week later on MTV when she was promoting her Bedtime Stories album.

Shortly after this, sadly, my mum became very ill and I stopped recording to look after her. When she died, I withdrew from the music industry for many years. Madonna knew what it was like to lose a mother and was very kind to me.

Ever since, there's only been one Queen of Pop for me — Madonna will always be the best female artist of all time and I hope she never stops rocking.
