Madonna lets her leading lady take spotlight in London

Madonna's Ladylike W.E Wardrobe: L'Wren Scott, Tom Ford, YSL

If there's one thing worth ditching the X Factor for, it's Madonna. So please forgive us for missing Tulisa et al last night but we couldn't possibly miss the chance to walk the red carpet alongside Her Madgesty.

James D'Arcy (R-L) Film-maker Madonna and Actress Andrea Riseborough attend the screening of 'W.E.' at The 55th BFI London Film Festival at Empire Leicester Square

Yep, if you were glued to our Twitter feed, you'll know Grazia trotted over to Leicester Square yesterday evening for the premiere of 'W.E' during the BFI London Film Festival. We gawped as our favourite popstar-turned-director was greeted by Madge Mania and confidently worked the crowd like a pro (natch). She was joined on the red carpet by the stars of her film, James D'arcy and Andrea Riseborough, who looked terrific in a tulle-skirted mega gown from Christian Dior's S/S '11 Couture collection.

Perhaps Madonna was allowing her leading lady a moment in the spotlight, because her red carpet frock was noticeably more modest. Unlike the breath-taking Vionnet gown + sparkling Miu Miu glasses which she wore for the Venice Film Festival, Madge chose a black L'Wren Scott dress for her London outing. Yes, the leaf pattern cascading from shoulder to the shin adds a flash of glitz and the heaving cleavage and fishnet stockings are a naughty touch but all in all, her look is unfussy, demure and super-sophisticated. Is this low-key elegance the latest reincarnation for the Queen of Reinvention, we wonder?

Indeed, it was just over a month ago that Madge was sporting a similarly sleek L'Wren Scott number when promoting her directorial debut at the Toronto Film Festival. The black and white sheath dress had a high neck, over which she wore a crucifix necklace, conjuring comparisons to a frumpy nun. Yeekz! In fact, Madonna's tour wardrobe is proving to be far safer than her signature eye-catching fare. Gone are the conical bras, sheer frocks and high-cut leotards stretched over gym-honed limbs and in their place are understated figure-flatterers more suited to a conservative Nicole Kidman than a risqué Madonna.

Need more proof? At the W.E press conference in Toronto, Madonna wore a red wool top with gathered sleeves teamed with a black cotton skirt – both from YSL but both rather dowdy. For the premiere that evening, we were treated to some sexy sheerness courtesy of this Tom Ford A/W '11 dress but still, it's no where near the Madge-tastic-ness we've become accustomed to.

So we want to hear YOUR verdict on Madonna's 'W.E' wardrobe. Are her restrained outfits begging for us to take her seriously as a director? Has the 53-year-old decided to dress her age and grow old gracefully with chicer numbers? Or are you just terriiibly bored? Pop your verdict in the box below...
