Madonna wrote ballad for W.E.

Billboard reports Madonna has written a ballad for her upcoming film "W.E." Though it's unknown whether or not she'll sing the song, it could bring the material girl her first Academy Award nomination in the Best Original Song category

Madonna has a checkered history with the Oscars. She won a Golden Globe for her starring role in the musical "Evita" (1996) -- besting eventual Oscar champ Frances McDormand ("Fargo"). She also has five Globe nods for penning original songs for "Die Another Day" (2002), "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" (1999), "With Honors" (1994), "A League of Their Own" (1992), and "Who's That Girl" (1987). She even won a Grammy for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture for the "Austin Powers" hit "Beautiful Stranger."

The Academy, however, has totally overlooked her. They clearly saw "Evita," nominating it for five awards. It won Best Original Song for a ballad Madonna sang called "You Must Love Me," but the queen of pop didn't share in that songwriting credit so she didn't get a statuette. She also crooned "Sooner or Later," the Oscar-winning tune from "Dick Tracy" written by Stephen Sondheim.

"W.E.," opening Dec. 9, is a strong contender for Best Costume Design.
