Madonna's secret Paris restaurant

Discovering Madonna & Renee Zellweger's secret Paris restaurant
CultureMap Houston
Travel & Leisure had previously outed the tiny Restaurant Petrelle in a "Best of Paris" round-up and more than a few publications have mentioned it as a favorite of Madonna and Christian Louboutin. A year ago, Katy's own Renée Zellweger and Bradley ...

Everyone who knows anything about Paris has a favorite restaurant or two or three. When we asked Paris-based designerAndrew Gn and his partner Erick Horlinfor a recommendation, they hesitated. You could see the ambivalence. Should they or should they not share their favorite spot with a member of the media who would surely blab about it back home in Houston?

But that cat was already out of the bag. Travel & Leisure had previously outed the tiny Restaurant Petrelle in a "Best of Paris" round-up and more than a few publications have mentioned it as a favorite of Madonna andChristian Louboutin. A year ago, Katy's own Renée Zellweger andBradley Cooper were sighted by People magazine as having a romantic dinner there.

So off we went on a 15-minute cab ride to the ninth arrondissement, making it just in time for our 8:30 reservation.

For all the charm that the neighborhood lacks, the interiors of this tiny eatery (named after its address at 34 Rue Pétrelle) pulsate with a country house-like warmth and a clever visual play that extends from the colorful murals to the zany chandeliers that gently light the nine tables. That's right, only nine tables. One waiter. One chef — Jean-Luc André. And one house cat, a friendly feline that strolls nonchalantly among the tables.

While you can't describe the playful interiors as romantic, the restaurant enjoys a certain sex appeal thanks in part to the soft lighting and in part to the seductive candlelight and fading roses on the tables.

My husband followed Gn's advice and ordered the oeufs en cocotte with fragrant morels as a starter. This wildly rich concoction of buttered eggs cooked in a ramekin and braised in a bath of heavy cream was heavenly. My fricassee of artichoke salad, at the opposite end of the calorie spectrum, was delectably satisfying in a totally different way.

That's right, only nine tables. One waiter. One chef — Jean-Luc André. And one house cat, a friendly feline that strolls nonchalantly among the tables.

We shared tastes of our main courses — my husband savoring his pigeon and I loving the country-style roasted lamb accompanied with a melange of eggplant and other garden vegetables. The ever-changing seasonal menu and selection of fresh-from-the-garden ingredients are what appeal most to Gn and Horlin. They report that the chef grows the heirloom vegetables and herbs at his country home not far from Paris. What he doesn't grow himself, he picks up in the neighborhood.

Moving on to dessert, again on Gn's recommendation, I opted for the chocolate cake while my husband ordered the cheese course. The rich cake with creme anglaise was to die-for. My husband chose his cheeses from a vast serving tray presented by the waiter.

It was a leisurely dinner that did not suffer from the absence of a full-blown wait staff. Chef André performed with remarkable accuracy on every course, particularly since there was only one assistant in the kitchen on this night.

Just before departing, the waiter arrived at the table with the a help-yourself basket of the restaurant's signature meringues. We finished that taste treat just as the taxi arrived to whisk us back to our hotel.

Madonna's romantic drama 'W.E.' set to bow this December

December seems to be Harvey Weinstein's month to release films by actors- and singers-turned-directors. One week after the Weinstein Co. intends to bow its Shakespearean tragedy "Coriolanus" (which Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in along with Gerard Butler and "Tree of Life's" Jessica Chastian), the studio will open Madonna's "W.E.," starring Abbie Cornish, on Dec. 9.

Madonna's movie, which she co-wrote with her "Truth or Dare" collaborator Alek Keshishian, is an offshoot of the characters from 2010's Oscar best picture winner "The King's Speech," specifically Britain's King Edward VIII and the American divorcee Wallis Simpson, the woman he fell in love with and for whom he gave up the throne. The film toggles between a contemporary woman named Wally, played by Abbie Cornish ("Sucker Punch"), and her obsession with the midcentury British romance.

Said Weinstein of the December date: "Madonna beautifully interweaves past and present in 'W.E.' It's a very smart film, and a stunning directorial debut. I'm incredibly excited about this movie and I wanted to give it a prominent release date."

Weinstein Co. will open "W.E." in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 9, expanding to additional markets throughout the month, before the wide release intended for mid-January. "W.E." also stars Andrea Riseborough ( "Never Let Me Go"), James D'Arcy ("Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World") and Oscar Isaac ("Drive").

Whether the film has an Oscar prospects, as the date suggests, remains to be seen. But "The King's Speech" did prove Americans love a good story about the monarchy.

People Magazine : Madonna & Brahim

Madonna and her reported beau Brahim Zaibat spent a whirlwind weekend in Paris, dancing and dining just weeks after they supposedly broke up.

The pop superstar, 52, and the French break dancer, 24, arrived in Paris on Friday and dined at The Ritz's Espadon restaurant that evening.

On Saturday, Madonna was out on her own, flea marketing at Clignancourt's Marché aux Puces, before reuniting with Zaibat for a private dinner. Also at the meal were Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, who did some of the Material Girl's Sticky & Sweet tour outfits, and model Mariacarla Boscono.
But the evening didn't end there: At midnight, the pair stopped in at the VIP Club for a few hours of disco fun.

Madonna and Zaibat have been linked since last year, following her split from Jesus Luz. There were reports that she and Zaibat had broken up in May, but things appear to be on the mend.

A rep for Madonna did not immediately return calls for comment.

Liz Smith looks back on her exclusive scoops

And more from our Gossip Girl: Shorts are back — even on men? … women and implants — the news continues to be dire

"I AM my own creation. I am my own work of art."

That was Madonna, way back before Lady Gaga began saying things like that.

I've been reminding you (and myself!) of some of my "great scoops" over the decades — breaking the Woodward/Bernstein book "The Final Days" … The Donald and Ivana Trump divorce … Elizabeth Taylor's wedding to Larry Fortensky.

Inevitably we arrive at Madonna. Aside from Miss Taylor, Madonna has surely taken up the most space in my column. I didn't "get her" at first, but eventually I was charmed by her brash attitude, her supreme confidence, her various tributes to great stars of the past, her brilliant videos and quite a lot of her music, even. And, she was a marketing genius. She spoke openly about issues of homophobia, violence against women and being true to one's nature —"Express Yourself" was her anthem.

By the time I finally clapped eyes on her, in 1991, at the premiere of "Truth of Dare," she was very much aware of the extensive support I'd given her. She was brunette and heavily painted and wearing something revealing. I thought she seemed like a little girl dressed up, trying to be a big girl. I was there being interviewed for "Primetime Live." The producers wondered if Madonna would give them a moment of her time and speak about me? As this was her premiere, I doubted it. I was wrong. "I love Liz Smith because she has big balls like me!" she said, laughing. Although it didn't make the final cut, on air, of course. (I have her compliment embroidered on a pillow given to me byDiane Sawyer and Mike Nichols.) A few years later, I was interviewing her for real. As we prepared, she looked me straight in the eye and said, "You're not afraid of me. I like that."

Over the years I found her warmer, nicer, much more vulnerable than she ever let on, publicly. She had (and still does) a wonderful press rep, Liz Rosenberg, with whom I am also friends. My column had the best access to her, first dibs on her latest videos and albums. I was in her corner, especially when such press pleasure was taken at her mistakes or failures. She was always supposed to be "over," but somehow never was.

I had championed Madonna to star in the film version of "Evita" way before anybody else thought of it. When she finally captured the role, I felt I was a part of that triumph. Two weeks into filming "Evita" in Argentina, I received a call late Friday from Liz R. "Liz," she said "I have some news." Pause. "Madonna is pregnant." "What?!" I shouted. "How far along? "Two months." I was sputtering in shock. The world had been waiting for "Madonna and Child" for years. Now it was happening. (The father was trainer/actor Carlos Leon, who was desperately in love with her, and one of the nicest men she ever loved.) "But filming has just begun. How can she hide it? And all the strain…" Suddenly, Madonna herself got on the line —"Liz, I'm pregnant, and I'm having my baby, now write!"

I sure did. Only one teeny problem. I had to hold the story for 78 hours! Even in 1996, this was almost impossible. I had to wait till the very last moment to send my column Monday morning. The syndicate was going crazy. Then I had to alert my papers, so they could clear the front page. I was sure I was going to lose the scoop. But I didn't. It held. And as with Donald and Ivana and Elizabeth's wedding, the day the story broke news crews awaited me in the lobby of my building and the phone rang nonstop. Yes, that is always kind of absurdly thrilling.

Madonna paid me back for all my support by giving me what I needed most — a great big juicy exclusive. And she was grateful in other ways. Once, at the height of her "unpopularity" — the duel release of her "Body of Evidence" movie and her "Sex" book — she called me. "It's Madonna. I just want to thank for all you've written. I know you take a lot of shit for it."

I was charmed. It was almost — but not quite — as good as a scoop.

New Madonna Comic coming soon

News release from Bluewater Productions:
Bluewater is pleased to announce a special comic book project featuring one of the most accomplished and well-known figures in the history of American pop culture, Madonna.
"Female Force: Madonna" will be released in August 2011 and have a cover price of $3.99. The bio on the pop icon's life will be written by CW Cooke and drawn by Michael Johnson.
Madonna is arguably the most influential figure in the history of American music. This comic book will focus on her humble beginnings and the incredible events that led to her eventually becoming one of the few people in the world recognized by only their first name! Though she has paved the way for many female pop stars that came after her, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga to Beyonce she is unique in that while many are compared to her, she is never compared to anyone else. There is still only one Madonna and even today, in her fifties, she remains culturally relevant. This comic book shows the influences on her music and style that in turn have influenced every pop star who aspires to not only make songs that people will always remember, but have an impact on society.
The "Female Force" comic series offers a broad examination of strong and influential women who are shaping modern history and culture. In past issues, the monthly series has featured, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, JK Rowling, Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Palin and others.
Bluewater's Vice President Jason Schultz said, "Our goal is to show the little-known events and influences that resulted in Madonna becoming the phenomenon she remains to this day, more than a quarter-century after she burst upon the scene. A visual medium provides perspective that is not only accessible but more relatable to the average person without losing any of the information involved".
This 32-page comic book will be chronicling this saga, "Female Force: Madonna " will explore all sides of this inimitable talent, from her live performances, ever-changing musical tastes, to her being a leader in fashion and her charity work, Madonna has made positive contributions to her fans' lives and society at large and how, despite numerous controversies she remains beloved by more fans than ever. Through it all, she always remained true to herself and appeared to be genuine. What you see is what you get with her. That - and her remarkable talent is what has made her an enduring legend. Madonna is quite simply one of the most powerful women in the history of entertainment.
"Most pop stars owe everything to this woman. It's amazing all of the things that she's done in her lifetime, and I have a feeling that this is still only the beginning", says Cooke, who said he had fun scripting the Material Girl's life story.

In this award-winning*, autobiographical one-act, writer/performer John Paul Karliak wants desperately to be the perfect son for his adopted mother: a doting Catholic housewife from Scranton, PA. But realizing he will never be the ideal local boy, he seeks answers from a very different source: his fashion-writing, married-to-a-British-pop-star birth mother. "Donna/Madonna" is a tale of motherly love and finding acceptance told through stories, songs and characters like Darth Vader, Carol Channing and John Paul's unforgettable mothers. Hilarious and poignant, this cross-country journey from Scranton to LA shows that sometimes you have to meet a "Material Girl" to truly appreciate "America's Sweetheart."

Proceeds will benefit Kinship Center©, a California nonprofit agency dedicated to the creation, preservation and support of foster, adoptive and relative families for children who need them.

Madonna arrives in London

She has made no secret of her quest to hold back the year.

But it seems the Queen of Pop may finally be taking a more relaxed approach to the process of ageing.

Madonna was seen today arriving at Heathrow Airport sana make-up revealing visible signs of ageing around her eyes which would be expected of any 52-year-old.

Back to the beats: Madonna looks extremely youthful despite her 52 years as she arrived in London earlier today. The singer is said to be hitting the studio next month

But the superstar singer is no ordinary woman, and it has been alleged that she has spent thousands in her bid for eternal youth.

Madonna was accompanied through the airport by son David,  who has grown into a strapping young boy, and appeared older than his five and a half years.

The Malawi-born boy was looking extremely grown up as he arrived back in the UK with Madonna and Rocco, Madonna's son with Guy Ritchie.

David was smiling as the 52-year-old singer held his hand as the family made their way through the airport and was dressed in a pair of jeans and a 'Punk Metal' printed T-shirt.

Not only was the boy looking confident but he appears to have undergone a recent growth spurt and is nearly as tall as Madonna's shoulders.

The singer was casually dressed in all black and covered her eyes with a pair of oversized sunglasses and had her blonde hair pinned to one side of her face.

Madonna and David were joined by Rocco, who turns twelve in August for the flight from JFK in New York back into England.

The Vogue singer met David when he was just a baby living in an orphanage after the singer participating in the Raising Milawi initative and in October 2006 she filed for adoption of David.

Although the little boy has a biological father, and although under Malawian law adoptive parents are supposed to reside in the country for over a year the adoption was finalised in 2008.

Madonna, who has been working on her new film W.E. of late and while the music mogul turned movie director had hoped to screen the film at this year's Cannes festival it wasn't ready in time.

It is thought the film which charts the relationship between King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson will be released later this year or early 2012.

her 11-year-old son Rocco

While her music has been put on the back burner in recent years, with her focus turning to her other business ventures including her Material Girl clothing range and her Hard Candy gyms, the singer and songwriter is set to return to her music next month.

Her manager Gary Oseary tweeted a message to his followers last week and said: 'Madonna  goes into the recording studio next month to begin work on new album.'

Here’s What Madonna Needs To do For Her Next Album To Be A Hit

Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, took to Twitter yesterday to announce that the Queen of Pop would be hitting the studio next month to begin work on her twelfth studio album – her first since 2008’s Hard Candy. “Madonna goes into the recording studio next month to begin work on new album,” he wrote. Soon after, a fan asked who M would be hitting the studio with, and Oseary responded, saying, “She has a good idea on which producers she will be working with.”

He did not elaborate further.

Which got us thinking about what we’d like to hear from the pop trendsetter who’s done it all. More than 28 years into her record shattering career, Madonna really doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone – she’s the top-selling female artist ever, has had more top ten hits than Elvis (or anyone else, alive or dead) and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. But with Lady Gaga hotter on her heels than any other diva who’s made a play for her throne, Madge does have a reason to put out a killer album.

As longtime fans, we know what has and hasn’t worked for Madonna over the years. Read on for our thought on how she should approach her next record.

Stay Away From “Hot” Producers

Dr. Luke has worked wonders for Britney Spears (“Till The World Ends”) and Katy Perry (“Teenage Dream”). RedOne and Lady Gaga have the kind of connection that produces insta-classics like “Bad Romance.” Max Martin has become Pink’s go-to guy for recent hits like “Raise Your Glass.” Madonna should stay away from all of these people.

Here’s why: It didn’t really work last time. On Hard Candy, Madonna collaborated with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Danja and Pharrell Williams. The results were mostly fine – we’re actually partial to her tunes with Williams, especially “Incredible” and “The Beat Goes On” – and she scored her biggest hit in years with the Timberlake jam “4 Minutes.” But her previous set, Confessions on a Dance Floor, was widely considered a return to form, and, frankly, running to of-the-moment producers in an attempt to score some easy hits felt cheap and a little desperate coming from one of the most forward-thinking minds in pop, particularly on the heels of her best album in years.

Make Some Real Dance Music

In the late-90s and early aughts, Madonna did something that no other pop star could do: She brought real dance music to America, and America liked it. She eschewed the conventions of pop music at the time, which was dominated by the bubblegum thump of early Spears and NSYNC, and opted instead to work with underground producers like William Orbit and Mirwais Ahmadzai to introduce electronic and house sounds that were completely foreign to domestic radio. She was rewarded with career-best reviews, reinvigorated album sales and multiple Grammy Awards for her effort.

With that in mind, we suggest she make a few phone calls. A good place to start would be with the Swedish trio Swedish House Mafia – Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell. With little mainstream fanfare, their latest single “Save the World” has racked up over 12 million views on YouTube. Axwell sits on DJMag’s list of the top ten DJ’s in the world. Others to consider from that same listing: Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren, both of whom specialize in the kind of progressive trance and house music that gets crowds moving (and M does have that massive 360, touring-recording deal with Live Nation to deliver on).

What we’re saying is, the best Madonna music has been born from like-minded collaboration with lesser-known dance producers she is herself a fan of, not from current production giants looking to throw their signature beats at the wall to see what sticks.

Write About Something

The weirdest thing about Hard Candy was the almost regressive nature of some of the lyrics. Music, Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor were buoyed by thoughtful, reflective lyrics about love, life and spirituality, while a track on Hard Candy had the then-49-year-old singer cooing the line “see my booty get down.” Yes, her signature theme – which we’d boil down to the universal catharsis and release only the dance floor can provide – was present on all these albums, but it wasn’t as smartly crafted on Candy as it was on her past efforts. Lyrically, decades-old albums like Erotica and Like a Prayer felt like more mature works.

Since her last album, Madonna has been through a lot, including an adoption, divorce and her return to New York. She’s also the only pop star in the world who can address what it’s like to be a sex symbol aging in full view of the public. Her age has led some pop critics to write her off entirely. Tell us what it feels like to have people turn their backs on you despite the fact that your hit-making instincts and songwriting chops are as sharp as ever, Madonna. We’re all ears!

Hugh Vickers (like Madonna) defends Wallis Simpson

Hugh Vickers (like Madonna) defends Wallis Simpson -- this time at Maryland Historical Society

Hot on the high heels of the report that Madonna's Wallis Simpson movie ("W.E." ) has won distribution from the Weinstein Company comes the announcement that Hugh Vickers, author of "Behind Closed Doors: The Tragic, Untold Story of the Duchess of Windsor," will defend Simpson in person on Thursday, June 23, at the Maryland Historical Society, 201 W. Monument St. in Baltimore, at 6:00 pm.

"If Wallis Simpson had never been born, King Edward VIII might not have abdicated the throne," Vickers conceded to the Sun's Mary Carole McCauley when she interviewed him two months ago. But Vickers called the Baltimore-bred divorcee who became the Duchess of Windsor "one of the most unfairly maligned women of the 20th century."

"She was a victim from the beginning, and she was a victim at the end. The duchess was quite ambitious and feisty, but she got into a situation where she was completely out of her depth. There's plenty of evidence that she never wanted to marry the king. She wanted to run a mile away, but by then she was in too deep.

"I'm just asking people to look at her in a slightly different way."

Fees are $35 for MdHS members, $50 for non-members. For more information or to RSVP by June 16th, contact 410-685-3750 ext. 337 or estafford@mdhs.org.

Dicky Tracy coming out on blu ray and a sequel

Their dysfunctional little family unit, where bickering is replaced with a great noir-ish rapid-fire wit-battles, is threatened by the introduction of Madonna's Breathless Mahoney is more femme fatale than I remembered, with some truly filthy double entendres. I mean, there's literally one where Tracy thinks Tess is at the door and asks what kind of ice cream she got and when he opens the door there's Madonna with a smile and a "Fresh peach… and it's starting to drip." No shit! That's the filthiest thing I've ever heard! This is a kid's movie!

Not to mention you clearly, CLEARLY see Madonna's nipples the first time Tracy goes backstage at The Ritz. There's even a medium shot and there they are, poking through the transparent mesh she's wearing… clear as crystal.

On the cover: a picture of the singer wearing a belt with the contentious slogan "Boy Toy". Inside: a handful of songs that set her apart from every female singer who had come before. One was Material Girl, which boldly stated that, in her world, love came a distant second to money; another was the title track, which, in the context of a euphoric love song, confidently referred to her sexual history, something mainstream pop girls simply hadn't done before.

> A woman in control of her sex life and career was such a new idea that Madonna became the biggest thing to hit pop, and popular culture, in years. And she's stayed that way: her influence on the way women came to view sex, love and themselves was so great that some universities offered courses in Madonna studies. And she's also continued to make some of pop's most enduring singles.
