Madonna releases a statement after L'olympia show

Madonna releases statement after the "MDNA à L'Olympia" Controversy: "Playing the Olympia was a magical moment for me and it was real treat to do this special show for my fans and be so close to them. Unfortunately at the end of the show – after I left the stage – a few thugs who were not my fans rushed the stage and started throwing plastic bottles pretending to be angry fans. The press reports have focused on this and not the joyous aspect of the evening. But nothing can take away or ruin this very special evening for me and my fans. When I looked out in the audience, everyone I saw had a smile on their face. I look forward to having this wonderful experience again." - Madonna

Irish Examiner Praises the MDNA tour

Rain fails to stop Madonna in her tracks

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

She may have underperformed at the ticket kiosk, but Madonna delivered — and then some — at the Aviva in Dublin last night.

The first of Madonna's two Dublin concerts on her MDNA world tour was hardly a sellout but, with 300 million album sales to her credit, the Queen of Pop did not seem at all bothered.

The show opened with bell-ringing, Gregorian chant and a giant incense burner swinging back and forth across, the stage before Madonna arrived to perform a perfectly rambunctious Girl Gone Wild.

The 53-year-old Madonna demonstrated her fitness by back-flipping from a staircase into her dancers' arms. it was just the first in a series of elaborate set-pieces and myriad costume changes that saw Madonna showcase songs old and new with a troupe of performers that included her children Lourdes and Rocca.

"Bang bang, shot you dead/Bitch out of order, bat out of hell," she sang on Gang Bang. Blood splattered across the backdrop as Madonna wrestled vigorously with a dancer on a bed on stage.

The opening salvo of up-tempo numbers gave way to a more subtle Heartbeat — dancers in gasmasks prowled the stage while the backdrop showed scenes from a graveyard.

But moments later, Madonna re-emerged as leader of a marching band to rework her 1989 track Express Yourself, mashing it up cheekily with Lady Gaga's Born This Way monster hit of last year, pointing up one song's all-too-obvious resemblance to the other.

As darkness fell, Madonna eased into her performance. "I've never been in Ireland when it didn't rain," she joked between songs. "What the fuck?" The crowd seemed not to mind the drizzle or her language as she launched into Justify My Love, Vogue and Erotic.

Madonna may have flashed one breast in Turkey last month, and the other in Paris last week, but in Dublin, she was more concerned with showing off her Gaeilge.

Earlier, Madonna had invited a few hundred of the early arrivals into the stadium and up on stage, where she exchanged Irish phrases with them before performing a selection of tunes that included Celebration and Give Me All Your Loving.

There was always the possibility that she might expose herself later, and late in the gig, she flashed the cheeks of her backside, and her thong, and writhed about stage as she performed Like A Virgin. But that, thank God, was as far as it went.

A brilliant gig.

Madonna explains use of swastika during MDNA tour

Madonna on stage at Murrayfield on 21 July The video image in question has appeared in previous shows of the world tour

Madonna has spoken about an image used during her current MDNA tour which showed a swastika imposed onto the face of a French politician.

The controversial symbol was included in a video accompanying the song Nobody Knows Me, as she performed in Paris.

It showed the face of Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's National Front party, with a swastika on her forehead.

Interviewed for a Brazilian TV channel, Madonna said all images used were chosen "purposefully".

"That film that was created is about the intolerance that we human beings have for one another and how much we judge people before knowing them," she said.

France's National Front party (FN) said it planned to sue the US singer following the use of the image at her concert in the Stade de France on 14 July.

"Start Quote

All images in the video were chosen purposefully"

The video had already appeared earlier in Madonna's 30-nation MDNA world tour, sparking a warning from Ms Le Pen that she was considering legal action.

FN vice-president Florian Philippot said the party could not accept "such an odious comparison".

But Madonna refused to edit the video and, speaking before her concert in Brazil, the singer said "all images in the video were chosen purposefully".

"There seems to be a growing intolerance around the world. In Greece, France, everywhere people are trying to kick out all the immigrants, make people cover up and not show what their religious affiliation is.

"Think about what's going on in Russia towards the gay community," she said.

"I'm calling attention to that intolerance and asking people to pay attention, to wake up to see how we are just creating more chaos in the world."

Displaying the swastika image has not been the only controversy on Madonna's MDNA tour.

During her show in Edinburgh on 21 July, the singer defied warnings not to brandish a gun during her performance following the recent shootings at a cinema screening of Batman in Colorado.

Madonna said she believed it is an artist's responsibility to call attention to world events "and to help bring people together".

"Art is there to track what's going on in the world, to make social commentary," she said.

Madonna: A Singing Agent of Russian Imperialism!

What is behind the dates Madonna chooses for her concerts? Could she have an ulterior motive? In this lampooning of the Polish right – which is apparently hysterical over Madonna's impending arrival in the country for a series of performances – columnist Bartosz Weglarczyk of Poland'sRzeczpospolita offers a humorous history lesson while explaining what the 53-year-old music diva might be up to.

For Rzeczpospolita, Bartosz Weglarczyk starts off this way:

A sizable chunk of the political right is protesting Madonna's concert on August 1, from Solidarni 2010 to Law and Justice Party representative Artur Górski. I would like to throw my support behind them, as I suspect that the pop singer is working on orders from the Kremlin!

There is nothing coincidental about the dates Madonna chooses her concerts. In Warsaw, she wants to mock the memory of the insurgents of the Warsaw Uprising, but this is just one more step on her trail of ignominy. Madonna began the European leg of her tour in Turkey on June 7th, the day every Muslim mourns the anniversary of the siege of Jerusalem during the First Crusade in 1099!

On June 14, Madonna sang in Milan. This is the day Italians remember Napoleon's Victory of Marengo in 1800, which opened the way to his conquest of Italy. On June 14 every inhabitant of Milan is lost in mournful reverie, so aren't likely to want to listen toVogue!

Then on June 24, the singer offended the Portuguese by performing on the anniversary of the Battle of Sao Mamede, a key event in the creation of the Kingdom of Portugal. This insult should make Representative Górski especially indignant, as he was once the leader of the club of Polish monarchists in the Parliament. [Górski led an effort to have Jesus Christ declared honorary 'King' of Poland].

madonna learns a few tricks from the circus

Madonna's attempts to keep her performances "edgy" have seen her exposing her breasts at recent concerts. The 53-year-old singer's efforts could become even more daring after she took some tips from the cast members of a vaudeville circus show.

Madonna and 15 members of her entourage, including her 24-year-old boyfriend, Brahim Zaibat, a French breakdancer, attended a performance of Cantina at the Southbank Centre in London this week.

The performance was delayed by 20 minutes to allow the American and her chums to take their seats.

"She spent a lot of time engrossed in conversation with her friends about key bits of the show," says a member of the audience.

This Thursday, madonna will rock Paris!

Madonnas not putting away her guns

Madonna defied warnings from police to brandish a machine gun and a six-shooter pistol on stage at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium last night (July 21).

Local police had advised the Queen of Pop to not perform with pistols and an AK47 assault rifle – which she has used at previous shows including London's Hyde Park – on stage.

According to the Daily Record, the warnings came before the Denver cinema shooting, but were reinforced following the Aurora mass murder. The newspaper claims insiders hinted officers would stop the show if she defied them. But police never intervened and Madonna played her first ever Scottish gig without a hitch.

A spokeswoman for Mothers Against Guns told the Daily Record: "Madonna and her dancers using replica guns was always in bad taste but given what happened in Colorado it is even worse. She should know better."

In an unconventional show, Madonna walked on stage at 5.10pm to run through a quick rehearsal. During the soundcheck, the singer apologised to the early arrivals and told them that the main show would begin at 8.30pm – half an hour earlier than scheduled.

The 'Girl Gone Wild' singer even made reference to Bruce Spirngsteen's Hyde Park gig, which had the plug pulled by organisers for breaking curfew. She said: "I'm just running through some songs early. It's great to be here in Scotland. Due to your laws here they might pull the plug on me so if they cut us off suddenly, write to your local MP."

This isn't the first time Madonna has caused controversy on her 'MDNA' tour, after sheflashed a nipple in Istanbul and placed an image of a swastika on a picture of French National Front leader Marine Le Pen during a show in Tel Aviv.

Madonna criticised for defying police warning to use gun props on stage

Lothian and Borders Police had warned against the props. Picture: AP

Lothian and Borders Police had warned against the props.

MADONNA has been criticised after brandishing a hand weapon and machine gun on stage in Edinburgh, just two days after the 12 people were shot dead in a cinema in Denver.

The US singer defied a warning from Lothian and Borders Police not to use the controversial props during her first-ever performance in Scotland.

Critics said the move was particularly insensitive in light of Friday morning's massacre, the worst US mass shooting since 2009.

"Madonna has obviously developed this as part of her routine, but I think common sense should have been applied this weekend. Given the recent events in Denver and the fact that she was in Scotland – where the Dunblane massacre occurred – better judgement should have been used," said Shabnum Mustapha, director of Amnesty International Scotland.

Madonnas New Malawi Fundraising Campaign

BLANTYRE, Malawi — US pop diva Madonna, who is worth $650 million, has launched a new fund-raising drive to support the work of a Malawian paediatric surgeon, her charity announced, two years after she abandoned a girls' academy project in a cloud of alleged mismanagement.

Through her US registered charity Raising Malawi, the 'Queen of Pop' has emailed hordes of her well-wishers and fans, addressing them as Dear Friend, and asking: "Will you consider donating $5 or more to support people like Dr. Erick Borgstein, for many years the only paediatric surgeon in Malawi, who are helping orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi?"

Malawi, where 39 percent of the 13 million citizens are poor, has over one million orphans and vulnerable children, and less than 200 doctors, creating huge shortages in the medical system.

The charity said Borgstein "treats thousands of paediatric patients every year, performing hundreds of life-saving operations."

He also trains medical students in general and in paediatric surgery, thanks to the financial support from Raising Malawi.

"He will now formally train a young Malawian doctor to follow in his footsteps as a paediatric surgeon," the charity added.

Raising Malawi said for the past six years, it has "remained committed to supporting orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi... This would not be possible without the support of people like you, who share in our mission to end the poverty and hardship endured by the country's estimated one million orphans."

Calling itself the Raising Malawi Team, the charity thanked its supporters "for your support...we look forward to sharing future updates with you about the inspirational work of Dr. Borgstein and others."

It was not clearly how much money Madonna is seeking in this new venture, coming more than a year after her charity controversially cancelled the construction of a state-of-the-art $15 million Raising Malawi Academy for Girls -RMAG- in Chinkhota village, 15 kilometres from the capital Lilongwe.

The academy, meant to offer 500 scholarship to girls from poor backgrounds and train them into doctors and future leaders of the country, was mired in allegations of mismanagement, including excessive spending on offices and cars. An audit had found $3.8 million had been misused.

Madonna, who has adopted two children from Malawi- Mercy James and David Banda - said she had realised the academy would not be enough as two-thirds of Malawian girls are not educated beyond primary school and she wanted to reach "thousands and not hundreds of girls" by constructing several schools.

She said she was focussed on an approach to build 10 schools within communities across the country, that would educate at least 1,000 children a year, half of them girls.

The charity has teamed up with the non-profit group buildOn, which has constructed 54 primary schools in Malawi in the last 19 years.

Madonna a 'Gossip Girl' Fan?

An observant friend of ours who happens to be obsessed with all things Madonna, was amused when Madonna famously said "It feels reductive" to describe the similarities between Madonna's "Express Yourself" song and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." She used this rather obscure word in an ABC interview with Cynthia McFadden last January. Cynthia responded "Is that good?" Madonna coyly told the journalist to "look it up." Our Madonna fan was surprised to find that that same word had been used on an episode of "Gossip Girl" that aired in October 17, 2011 – three months before Madonna's interview aired. (We don't know what date she taped the interview) Blake Lively's character Serena used the word in a dismissive manner to a coworker. Our Madonna fan surmised that although she CLAIMS she never watches TV, Madonna was probably watching Gossip Girl with Lourdes and liked the sound of that word…

Madonnas house party caused neighbors to complain

Keep the noise down! Madonna's house party shut down after fed up neighbours called the council

The A-list after-show party held at her London house came to a premature end after two Westminster officials ordered her to keep the noise down following complaints from her neighbours.

The swanky soiree, which George Michael also attended, is believed to have been a raucous affair, and a frustrated neighbour eventually contacted the council.

Councillor Tony Devenish, Westminster Council's Cabinet Member for Public Health and Premises told Mail Online: 'Westminster Council's noise team received a complaint after midnight (July 18th) from a resident in Great Cumberland Place about loud music coming from a nearby house.

'When officers arrived, they could clearly hear music and shouting. In their opinion it was unreasonable on a weekday evening so they served a noise abatement notice on the owner of the house.

'As soon as the notice was received, the volume was turned down and there were no further complaints. As the householder acted reasonably and quickly, there was no need for any further action.'

According to the council, a section 80 noise abatement notice 'is only a formal warning that the residents of a property are creating a statutory nuisance, it is not in itself an offence.  The council has a duty to investigate allegations of statutory nuisance and if identified, must take action to abate the nuisance.'

Stella McCartney was also rumoured to be there, but it's unsure if she was present when the council officials made their visit.

George Michael and his boyfriend Fadi Fawas had left before the party was ordered to stop however, with singer's partner still proudly wearing the VIP tags from the concert.
